    Job Duties

    The Virginia Department of Education is seeking a qualified and experienced individual that will report to the Deputy Superintendent for Teaching and Learning who will serve as a key instructional leader in the Commonwealth to provide ongoing support for teaching and learning to practitioners in local school divisions. The successful candidate will provide visionary leadership with a focus on seeking strategies, programs, and policies that will improve student growth and achievement results for Virginia’s students. Expert guidance in providing teachers and administrators with professional development, technical assistance, and support in implementing pedagogy to engage students in their school experience is a key role of this leader. The successful candidate will provide leadership in policy to support the VDOE mission and vision for instruction in the Commonwealth. Pursuant to Sections 2.2-3114 and 2.23115 of the Code of Virginia, the position of Assistant Superintendent for Instruction has been designated to file by the Code of Virginia, an annual “Statement of Economic Interests” form.

    Minimum Qualifications

    • Experience in instructional leadership with comprehensive instructional programs and school improvement planning; and collaboration with families, students, instructional staff, and government officials to resolve educational issues.
    • Experience in managing taxpayer resources with strong fiscal management
    • Ability to supervise, coach, and evaluate personnel
    • Knowledge of education and the application of modern technologies in the PK-12 teaching and learning environment.
    • Knowledge of Virginia’s educational accountability program, particularly the Standards of Learning and assessment programs; best practices in curriculum and instructional; local, state, and federal education policies and procedures; and uses of educational data to drive teaching and learning.
    • Extensive experience managing project and associated teammates to deliver high quality projects on time and under budget
    • Prove track record of monitoring student growth and achievement data to drive instructional decisions that result in improved results for students
    • Able to manage multiple priorities and working with ambiguity.
    • Demonstrated interpersonal, public relations, and organizational skills with expertise in working with a variety of stakeholders, including parents, practitioners, and citizens.
    • Must have excellent communication skills, both oral and written, with the ability to foster positive working relationships.
    • Displays maturity and ability to work independently.


    Preferred Qualifications:

    • An advanced college degree in Education, in Education Administration/Supervision, Education Leadership, or a related field preferred.
