The successful candidate will join a vibrant academic community committed to excellence in teaching, research, and artistic practice.

    The University of Louisiana Monroe (ULM) is a public space-grant university in Monroe, Louisiana and one of the nine general campuses of the University of Louisiana system. ULM offers high-quality undergraduate and graduate degree programs, and a variety of educational and cultural resources for its students, faculty, staff, alumni, and community. The School of Visual and Performing Arts offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in music, the bachelor of fine arts in studio art, art education, and graphic design, and minors in theatre and dance. The department of art is planning to pursue accreditation from the National Association for Schools of Art and Design.

    Our faculty is committed to the belief that an education in the visual arts and related scholarship can be grounded in tradition while geared toward innovation; can foster both discipline-centered and interdisciplinary activity and discourse; and can achieve a fusion of informed dialogue, practice, and production. The successful candidate will have a clear, consistent, and respectful style of communication, both oral and written, and demonstrate the ability to articulate a vision and engage in creative problem solving. The ideal candidate will also demonstrate a strong commitment to collegial and collaborative engagement with colleagues and administrators in and outside of the university environment. The person will assist in recruiting a high caliber and diverse student population in a thriving university art program. Their experience, substantive specialization, and pedagogical training will serve to strengthen the school’s mission and vision.

    The successful candidate will begin in the Fall of the 2024 academic year. Review of applications will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled.

    The successful candidate will be committed to illustration and digital media forms as contemporary and creative art forms, maintain an active professional practice, and who are dedicated to an engagement with arts education at a public university. Other duties may include, but are not limited to the following:

    • Develop and teach undergraduate courses in illustration, covering both traditional and digital techniques.
    • Foster a supportive and innovative learning environment, encouraging students to explore their creative potential.
    • Provide constructive feedback on students’ work and guide them in developing a strong foundation in illustration principles.
    • Engage in active research and creative activities in the field of illustration, contributing to the academic and artistic community.
    • Publish scholarly works, participate in exhibitions, and present at conferences to enhance the department’s reputation and standing in the field.
    • Advise and mentor undergraduate students, assisting them in developing their artistic voice and career goals.
    • Provide academic and career guidance, fostering a supportive relationship with students.
    • Participate in school and university-wide committees, contributing to the growth and development of the academic community.
    • Contribute to curriculum development, program assessment, and accreditation efforts.
    • Maintain an active presence in the professional art community.
    • Establish connections with industry professionals, bringing valuable insights and opportunities to students.
    • Terminal degree (MFA or equivalent) in Art, Illustration, Digital Media, or related field.
    • Demonstrated excellence in teaching at the collegiate level.
    • A strong portfolio or original illustrations showcasing technical proficiency and creative innovation.
    • Active engagement in research, scholarly activities, and a record of artistic accomplishments.
    • Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
