The Department of Biology at Saginaw Valley State University invites a diverse pool of applicants for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position with expertise in microbiology anticipated to begin in August 2024. 

We encourage applicants from diverse microbiology subdisciplines such as microbial genetics (prokaryote or eukaryote), community analysis, or bioremediation. Priority will be given to candidates who demonstrate a broad foundational knowledge in microbiology. The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching lower- and upper-level microbiology courses consisting of lectures, labs, and possibly field work. The candidate will also contribute to teaching introductory-level biology courses. Participation in departmental, college, and university service events will be expected. The successful candidate is expected to develop an active undergraduate research program. We especially welcome candidates whose research interests complement those of the existing faculty.

Candidates should be committed to mentoring students in and out of the classroom and implementing active learning approaches aligned with Vision and Change. Preferred candidates will be those who demonstrate plans for the implementation of student-centered activities in lab and lecture.

The Biology Department offers four majors: (1) Cell Biology, Molecular Biology, and Biomedical Science; (2) Evolution, Ecology, and Organismal Biology; (3) Biological Sciences; and (4) Biology for Teacher Certification. In addition, the Biology Department teaches upper-level courses as part of the Environmental Science and Biochemistry Majors.

The Biology Department at SVSU has a strong record of engaging with undergraduate students through hands-on experiences in the classroom, laboratory, and field. Department resources include a 2000 ft2 greenhouse available for experiments, an electron microscope facility, small-animal care facility, and the large Ecological Research Area located on campus. The department also houses small collections of molluscs, fishes, mammals, birds, and insects in addition to an herbarium of regional plants, all of which are available for use in teaching.
