    Position description

The Department of Molecular, Cell and Developmental Biology at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in the area of biomedical science, who will serve the research and teaching needs of the new interdisciplinary Global and Community Health (GCH) Program. The successful candidate will complement our existing strengths in Molecular, Cell and Developmental Biology (https://mcd.ucsc.edu/), including Molecular and RNA Biology, Neuroscience, Immunology and Infectious Disease, and Cell and Developmental Biology. As participants in the GCH Program, we are particularly interested in applicants whose work can expand our understanding of human health and disease. Our collaborative environment extends to colleagues in the Departments of Chemistry & Biochemistry, Physics, Biomolecular Engineering in Baskin Engineering, Microbiology and Environmental Toxicology, the Genomics Institute, and the Social Sciences. We are especially interested in applicants who have a record of successful extramural grant proposals, and who use state-of-the art experimental approaches.

Our department is committed to diversity and inclusivity and we encourage applications from members of underrepresented groups. We offer a supportive and collaborative environment with active mentoring, and access to state-of-the-art technology. Successful candidates will be offered a competitive start-up package, modern lab space, and will be mentored by more established faculty members. Candidates will be expected to establish an innovative, externally-funded research program with high impact, contribute to the intellectual vitality of the UCSC scientific community, mentor students in their research lab, and provide service to the campus and their profession. Teaching responsibilities may include courses at the lower division, upper division, and graduate levels in the MCD and GCH curriculum.

We welcome candidates who understand the barriers facing women and individuals who are under-represented in the classroom and in higher education careers (as evidenced by life experiences and educational background), and who have experience in equity and diversity with respect to teaching, mentoring, research, life experiences, or service towards building an equitable and diverse scholarly environment.

The chosen candidate will be expected to sign a statement representing that they are not the subject of any ongoing investigation or disciplinary proceeding at their current academic institution or place of employment, nor have they in the past ten years been formally disciplined at any academic institution/place of employment. In the event the candidate cannot make this representation, they will be expected to disclose in writing to the hiring Dean the circumstances surrounding any formal discipline that they have received, as well as any current or ongoing investigation or disciplinary process of which they are the subject. (Note that discipline includes a negotiated settlement agreement to resolve a matter related to substantiated misconduct.)
