    The Opportunity
    The Department of Chemical & Biological Engineering at the Colorado School of Mines seeks a dynamic, enthusiastic leader to head the department.     Responsibilities

    The department head is expected to work effectively in a collaborative, interdisciplinary environment both within the department and college, and across the broader campus to:

    • Provide leadership to enhance the mission and activities of the Department by fostering a vision and strategy to strengthen its research and teaching and to enhance collaboration with other programs across campus;

    • Promote and support continued professional growth of faculty and staff, particularly in the areas of research program development and educational innovation;

    • Facilitate a world-class environment for research in the Department with active collaborations with academia, industry, and government agencies;

    • Advance efforts supporting diversity, inclusion and access;

    • Represent the Department to the university administration, other university units, industry, and to public and private agencies at the local, regional, national, and international levels;

    • Oversee recruitment of world-class faculty, and facilitate professional development, and retention of faculty, staff, and students;

    • Work closely with associated interdisciplinary programs such as quantitative biosciences & engineering and materials science to ensure seamless curriculum management and recruitment of students and faculty;

    • Lead fund-raising for Departmental activities, budget preparation, and management;

    • and Teach courses, advise graduate students, and maintain a leading international research program.


    Minimum Qualifications
    The department head will be appointed as an academic faculty member at the full professor level in the department. Therefore, a doctorate in chemical engineering, or a closely-related field with a distinguished record of accomplishment in scholarship, teaching and service as well as national and international recognition is required. Administrative experience and/or evidence of successful personnel and financial management are also desired. Strong leadership qualities, including effective interpersonal communication and organizational skills, are a must. The successful candidate will be expected to lead the department transparently and collegially. The successful candidate should be a strong advocate for the needs of the students, staff, and faculty within the department and have a strong commitment to diversity.

    Pay Range:

    Mines is offering a 9-month, academic year salary of $161,000 - $194,000. This is supplemented with a $20K stipend, a summer stipend, and the opportunity for summer and winter research compensation.


    Mines takes into consideration a combination of a candidate's education, training, and experience, as well as the position's scope and complexity, the discretion and latitude required in the role, work location, and external market and internal value when determining a salary level for potential new employees.
