Assoc. Professor - English teaches courses in the discipline area of English. Develops and designs curriculum plans to foster student learning, stimulate class discussions, and ensures student engagement. Being an Assoc. Professor - English provides tutoring and academic counseling to students, maintains classes related records, and assesses student coursework. Collaborates and supports colleagues regarding research interests and co-curricular activities. Additionally, Assoc. Professor - English typically reports to a department head. Requires a PhD or terminal degree appropriate to the field. Has considerable experience and is qualified to teach at undergraduate and graduate levels and conducts research and case studies in field of interest and may publish findings in trade journals or textbooks.   • Canterbury School is seeking a dynamic, talented, and experienced English teacher to join our faculty as a full-time teacher in the High School Division. Strong preference will be given to candidates with a subject-area degree and previous English teaching experience. Outside the classroom, the English teacher acts as an advisor to a small group of students and other student programs. A knowledge of best practices in teaching, flexibility, and the ability to collaborate closely with members of the department, administration, faculty, and staff are desired.

    Responsibilities:

    • Preparing and delivering engaging and developmentally appropriate lessons to students in Grades 9 - 12.
    • Fostering a nurturing, challenging, and supportive classroom and advisory environment that emphasizes mutual respect and positions students for a lifelong love of learning.
    • Effectively using technology to enhance instruction and learning.
    • Assessing student performance and providing feedback that supports growth and development.
    • Attentive monitoring and reporting on the performance of students, coordinated with administration, teachers, and parents to address concerns and correct problems when they arise.
    • Conducting parent conferences and communicating effectively with parents and families.
    • The active pursuit professional development in the areas of pedagogy, teaching techniques, and technology relevant to the field and subject, in order to provide students with a learning experience of the highest quality.
    • Supporting and facilitating student engagement into writing competitions (Scholastic and others), school newspaper participation, and yearbook publications
    • Other general supervisory duties throughout the school day, as assigned by the Division Directors.


    In addition, all Canterbury faculty member responsibilities include:

    • Supporting Canterbury School’s Mission
    • Supervising students when in your care
    • Interacting appropriately with the broader Canterbury community
    • Sponsoring student groups and activities
    • Attending professional development days, department meetings and faculty meetings
    • All other responsibilities as outlined in the faculty handbook


    Required Qualifications:

    • Bachelor’s Degree or higher (Education or related field is preferred)
    • Experience teaching various English classes at this age level
    • Understanding of AP level requirements and writing competitions (Scholastic) in high school English
    • Excellent organizational and time management skills
    • Outstanding written skills for communication and documentation
    • Flexibility, tact and grace in talking with parents
    • Ability to work successfully with colleagues as part of a team
    • Knowledge of developmental, social and emotional needs of high school students
    • Experience in and commitment to developing one’s own cultural competency and seeking, continually, greater levels of diversity, equity and inclusion in practices and curricula
    • Familiarity with classroom technology
    • Professionalism, a sense of humor, and a student centered approach
