    Position description

Department of Humanities and Social Sciences
    University of California, San Francisco
    Assistant/Associate Professor

The Department of Humanities and Social Sciences (DHSS) at the University of California San Francisco is seeking to fill a faculty position in the Joint UCSF/UC Berkeley Medical Anthropology Program, with full-time appointment on the UCSF Campus in DHSS at the assistant or associate tenure-track (ladder-rank) level.

The UCSF Department of Humanities and Social Sciences is a multi-disciplinary department in the School of Medicine with a strong mission in education, research, community outreach, and university service. The Department provides a supportive academic environment for original research, including opportunities for collaboration with researchers from other departments and UCSF Schools, as well as teaching and mentoring as part of our graduate programs.

The Joint Program in Medical Anthropology is an internationally-recognized graduate training program, and was the first of its kind in the nation. We train PhDs and MD/PhDs for careers in anthropology and medicine and allied health and research fields, with an institutional home on both UC campuses. Applicants are sought with expertise in theories of race and racism in relation to medical and health sciences, with research and teaching interests in these areas and with a commitment to serving institutional efforts to promote anti-racism at UCSF and in health and medicine writ large.

Duties: Responsibilities include: teaching core theory and directed elective courses for the graduate program in Medical Anthropology, up to six courses per year; advising and doctoral committee service for all UCSF and some UC Berkeley graduate students in Medical Anthropology; service to the department and throughout UCSF in the cross-institution Chancellor's Anti-Racism Initiative led by the Office of Diversity and Outreach. Applicants should show a promising and/or robust research and publishing career, including efforts to develop extramural funding, especially in the area of anthropology and theories of race and racism.

Qualifications: Applicants should have a PhD, or be very near completion of the PhD, in anthropology or a related field. Candidates must have a record of excellence and accomplishment appropriate for their experience conducting original research in medical anthropology. Candidates also must have excellent teaching and service qualifications.

Preference will be given to candidates with areas of research compatible with current departmental programs and who have a demonstrated track record of independent research.

Please apply online at https://aprecruit.ucsf.edu/JPF04828 and submit Cover letter, CV, Statement of Contribution to Diversity, Statement of Research, Statement of Teaching, two writing samples, and the names and addresses of three referees. Applicants' materials must list current and/or pending qualifications upon submission.

Deadline for applications is February 1, 2024.

For positions that are 51% effort or more:
The posted UC salary scales set the minimum pay determined by rank and step at appointment. See Table 5. The minimum base salary range for this position is $112,500-$176,000. Also included are the uninhabited Farallon Islands, 27 miles (43 km) offshore in the Pacific Ocean. The mainland within the city limits roughly forms a "seven-by-seven-mile square", a common local collo...
