The UNC-Chapel Hill School of Government is the nation's preeminent university-based hub for training, consulting, and impactful scholarship aimed at local and state government. The School is seeking a tenure-track professor to specialize in criminal law and procedure. The faculty member will be expected to be the School's point person in the high-profile and high-impact areas of impaired driving and motor vehicle law. He or she will also be expected to work, together with other faculty members, in other areas of criminal law and procedure, including the Fourth Amendment, the law of pretrial release, the issuance of criminal process, substantive criminal law, and sentencing.
The selected candidate will work primarily with magistrates, district court judges, and superior court judges as part of the Judicial College, though there will be opportunities to collaborate with colleagues and work with prosecutors, defenders, and other court officials as well. School faculty members frequently consult with legislators, General Assembly staff, and interest groups about potential changes to the law.

The successful candidate will be expected to publish scholarship in multiple formats, including blog posts, articles, and books. Two exemplary publications within this position's area of expertise are The Law of Impaired Driving and Related Implied Consent Offenses in North Carolina and Criminal Proceedings Before North Carolina Magistrates.

The person will be responsible for working with the NC Magistrates' Association and the Administrative Office of the Courts to plan educational programs for magistrates, including biannual orientation programs and conferences.

J.D., excellent writing skills, strong academic background, and a demonstrated commitment to public service required.

Experience in criminal law.

The writing sample should demonstrate your ability to engage in in-depth legal analysis. Common examples include appellate briefs, legal memorandum, and academic papers, including law review articles, comments, and notes. The writing sample does not have to address topics that fall within the areas of expertise described in the position description. There also is no requirement that the writing sample be recent, though if you submit a writing sample from more than five years ago, we recommend also providing a more recent sample.
