Assoc. Professor - Mathematics teaches courses in the discipline area of mathematics. Develops and designs curriculum plans to foster student learning, stimulate class discussions, and ensures student engagement. Being an Assoc. Professor - Mathematics provides tutoring and academic counseling to students, maintains classes related records, and assesses student coursework. Collaborates and supports colleagues regarding research interests and co-curricular activities. Additionally, Assoc. Professor - Mathematics typically reports to a department head. Requires a PhD or terminal degree appropriate to the field. Has considerable experience and is qualified to teach at undergraduate and graduate levels and conducts research and case studies in field of interest and may publish findings in trade journals or textbooks.   • UNM-Taos is excited to announce an external competitive search for two 1.0 FTE F9 tenure-track Assistant Professors in Mathematics. The successful candidates will be expected to assume a full workload (9-12 credit hours per semester plus 3-6 additional credit hour equivalence of course reassignment for a combination of service and professional development and other duties as assigned) in Mathematics or other credentialed discipline. The primary duties of this position will be to teach lower division mathematics courses and will be required to keep regular Math MaLL (tutoring center) and office hours each week, and other academic duties including:

         Committee and task force assignments

         Professional development activities

         Curricular and program development and coordination

         Mentoring of students and junior faculty

         Administrative duties as necessary

     

    The faculty members must be willing to try a variety of instructional approaches and commit to being part of a Professional Learning Community. The successful candidates will demonstrate commitment to equitable student success in their teaching and the ability to partner with other faculty and staff to increase college-wide student success.  Key to these positions is the skill set to provide greater opportunity to pursue grant funding, grant management, and provision of professional development at a higher and broader level within the department and across campus.

    UNM-Taos offers an Associate of Science Degree in Pre-Science as well as a number of developmental and gateway/general education core mathematics courses.

    Located approximately 130 miles north of Albuquerque, the historic town of Taos is nestled between the Rio Grande, Sangre de Cristo Mountains, and the ancestral lands of the Taos Pueblo.  Taos county has a vibrant cultural environment of Art, Music, Drama and Literature. The calendar section of the local paper’s ‘Tempo’ arts section (https://www.taosnews.com/tempo/ ) usually has multiple arts activities every night of the week. The county has extensive opportunities for outdoor recreational activities including hiking/biking, fishing, whitewater rafting, snowshoeing and skiing, with 4 ski resorts within 1 hour’s drive of Taos, including the world-famous Taos Ski Valley.

    The University of New Mexico-Taos is one of the four branch campuses of the state’s flagship institution, UNM.     UNM-Taos is the only college within a 50-mile radius and serves almost 1,300 students from our service area, which includes the counties of Taos, Rio Arriba, and Colfax, and the Pueblo Nations of Taos and Picuris. The UNM-Taos student body is representative of its communities, with 54% Hispanic and 5.5% Native American enrollment in fall 2023, making it one of the most diverse student bodies in the state. UNM-Taos is the recipient of several federal grants, including three TRIO programs (Student Support Services and Veterans Upward Bound), Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) grants including Title V and Title III: Part F STEM, USDA NIFA, and LIFT, and most recently, a National Science Foundation (NSF) grant in developmental math pedagogy.  Our latest project is the construction of a Space STEM Learning facility focused on K-12 and community education, with a learning space, outdoor amphitheater and outreach astronomical observatory housing the largest publicly accessible telescope in the region (scheduled opening Summer 2025).
