    Position Description Summary/Purpose:

    The University of Bridgeport is seeking candidates for Assistant Professor of Music in the College of Science and Society. The position also includes teaching, service, and administrative duties in the Music Education Teacher Certification program in the School of Education. 

    The successful candidate will teach courses across a wide variety of disciplines to support the undergraduate and graduate curricula and fulfill the department's administrative needs.

    This is a 12-month full-time position with a start date of August 2024.

    Essential Job Functions/Primary Responsibilities:

    Teaching and Advising:

    • Teach and develop curriculum for a variety of undergraduate courses, including contemporary and popular music studies, music business, music p according to the candidate’s expertise and department needs; teach and develop curriculum for graduate
    • Apply best pedagogical practices to the development of syllabi, the LMS resources, and classroom management, within the framework of the UB syllabus template.
    • Submit reports accurately and timely, including attendance, grades, and other related documentation.
    • Advise and actively coach students at the undergraduate and graduate level on academic issues, degree progress, and career and preparation.
    • Engage in appropriate professional activities (e.g., research, service, and professional development) to the field.
    • Demonstrate professional attitude, philosophy, compassion, and commitment that promotes student growth and learning.

    Administrative Duties:

    A key aspect of this position will be administrative service in the College of Science and Society and in the School of Education. The duties for service to the Undergraduate program include, but are not limited to:

    • Facilitate curriculum development, assist in regular curriculum review, and program assessment.
    • Hire, supervise, mentor, and review of all part-time faculty (30 adjuncts) and hold regular department meetings.
    • Manage and aid in the design and implementation of program curriculum, including timely submission of semester schedules and catalog updates.
    • Complete transfer credit evaluations for incoming transfer students and certification of majors for graduation.
    • Manage the music department budget, hire student workers/graduate assistants; manage facilities and equipment needs in consultation with the department faculty, the Dean, Campus Facilities, and Budget manager.

    The duties for service to the Graduate program include, but are not limited to:

    • Serve as Music Education Coordinator, and participate in state accreditation (CAEP) process within the School of Ed.
    • Review applications to the graduate music ed. degree program and meet with prospective students.
    • Pre-certify/certify graduate students for graduation, verify complete program plans.
    • Schedule graduate courses for summer/fall/spring semesters and select adjuncts.
    • Attend monthly meetings for program coordinators.
    • Update the catalog and website to ensure degree programs are represented accurately.
    • Student advocacy: address concerns, support improvement plans.
    • Participate in strategic planning for the School of Education.

    Other Expectations

    • Continue professional development and training; keep current in the relevant academic discipline, with trends in pedagogy and teaching methodology.
    • Participate as a departmental and program representative on standing and ad-hoc committees within the University.
    • Build community relationships and recruit students; participate in recruiting events hosted by the Admissions Office.
    • Work collaboratively with the university departments, including the Registrar’s office, Office of Admissions, Office of Student Academic Success.
    • Hold regular office hours and fulfill duties as required by the UB faculty handbook.
    • Perform all other duties as assigned and conduct all work in a safe manner and all work safety practices are followed.

    Required Qualifications:

    Education, Training and Experience:

    • Terminal degree in Music (ABD considered); Ph.D. or Ed.D. in Music Education Preferred.
    • PK-12 Music Teaching Certification.
    • Minimum of 3 years full-time K-12 music teaching experience.

    Preferred Special Requirements:

    • Leadership experience in an educational institution (e.g. PK-12 dept. chair)
    • Specialization in areas of Musicology, Jazz/popular music, Music Theory, Choral music, Digital music/composing, music business, and performance.
