Assistant Professor of Music - Specialization in Jazz (24/25)

  • The Music Department in the College of Liberal Arts at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, is seeking applications for a full-time, academic-year, tenure-track Assistant Professor to begin September 16, 2024. The ideal candidate will have a combination of university-level teaching experience and research potential. Primary teaching duties include directing big band jazz ensembles and small combos, and teaching classes in jazz studies. Depending on the Music Department’s teaching needs and the candidate’s teaching interests, the successful candidate may also teach some general education and major courses in jazz studies and other subjects.

    Non-instructional duties include professional performance and/or ensemble direction and/or other creative production, productive research and scholarship, service, academic advising, and mentorship of undergraduate students.

    Salary
    Anticipated Hiring Range: $81,888 - $87,550/year, $6,824-$7,296/month
    (Hiring level will be commensurate with the qualifications and experience of the candidate.)

    Although Cal Poly is primarily a teaching university, our faculty are expected to balance teaching with an active program of research/professional development (including publication and professional creative production), student supervision and advising, and participation in service activities at the department and college/university level. The typical teaching load is 12 units per quarter, with a reduction in course load in each of the first two years to help new faculty establish an active program of professional development.     REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

    • Master’s degree in music, music-related area, or equivalent.
    • Demonstrated university teaching experience.
    • Evidence of potential for continued scholarly and/or creative achievement in area of specialization.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

    • Doctorate in Music, music-related area, or equivalent, earned, or nearing completion (degree completion expected no later than September 16, 2024).
    • Demonstrated experience in undergraduate teaching and jazz ensemble leadership.
    • Demonstrated experience in professional performance and/or ensemble direction and/or other creative production.
    • Record of scholarship in music and/or related disciplines.
    • Earned degree and/or demonstrated accomplishment in Ethnomusicology.
    • Demonstrated commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.
    • Demonstrated experience and commitment to student-centered learning and teaching.
    • Demonstrated ability to collaboratively work with colleagues in other music subdisciplines and/or in multidisciplinary settings.
    • Demonstrated experience working with diverse populations and fostering a collaborative, supportive, and inclusive environment.

    Currently the Music Department, in the College of Liberal Arts, has 9 music professors and about 30 lecturers and applied faculty.
