Asst/Assoc/Full Research Professor

  • Position Overview
    The KU Life Span Institute (KU LSI) and Assistive Technology for Kansans (ATK, ) is seeking an Assistant, Associate or Full Research Professor to lead the implementation of the federally funded Kansas Statewide Assistive Technology Program. This is a full time, 12-month, Academic Staff appointment.

    In addition to directing the statewide program, this position will oversee programs related to the foundational program, ATK, and respond to new research issues coming from the field and to grant opportunities that address barriers identified by Kansans with disabilities and health conditions. LSI research staff are expected to actively engage in research projects and disseminate research results through print, online resources, and direct, in-person presentation of information.

    Assistive Technology for Kansans (ATK) is a 30-year-old statewide program with a staff of 24 AT Specialists who deliver technology services and supports to Kansans of all ages and all disabilities. Through collaboration with state agencies, educational cooperatives, and disability organizations ATK coordinates six AT Access Sites, the ATK State Device Loan Program, operates the Kansas Equipment Reuse program, Telecommunications Access Program, Dual Party Relay, and KS iCan Connect Deaf Blind program.

    Job Description
    Research (90%)
    Co-Direct/ Direct an active program of currently funded research and service initiatives related to assistance technology solutions regarding increased financial and personal independence, aging, education, wellness, recreation, and employment for persons with disabilities and health conditions (60%)
    • Lead the grant management team, work with staff in meeting grant obligations.
    • Analyze data, suggest modifications, identify staff and consumer training needs and topics.
    • Identify novel applications or extensions of assistive technology
    • Produce research suitable for publication in refereed journals or other scholarly outlets.
    • Be consistently and regularly engaged at the state and national level in the identification of areas of research related to assistive technology and related areas of health and wellness.
    Prepare and submit competitive grant proposals related to the application of assistive technology supports and services to advance personal health, wellness, finance, independent living, employment, and education ( 20%).
    • Ensure work focus is across the lifespan through work with consumers, state and national stakeholders, funders and others to identify research questions, lead the preparation of grant application methodology and study design, develop the grant proposals and work with Life Span Institute Pre-Award staff in the submission of grant applications.
    Disseminate on-going program successes and research findings (10%).
    • Collect and disseminate brief consumer outcome anecdotes to state agencies, news outlets, and other sites.
    • Prepare and disseminate general language summaries of research to funders, legislators, and others.
    • Prepare and disseminate results of research in professionals outlets (e.g., conferences, symposium, webinars.

    Service (10%)
    Engage in service activities at the University, state, national and international levels
    • Maintain active participation on committees within and outside the university.
    • Represent the University of Kansas, the KU Life Span Institute and the Assistive Technology for Kansans within professional communities.
    • Serve on editorial boards and engage in professional activities to advance the footprint of the KU Assistive Technology Program.
    Required Qualifications
    To be considered for Assistant, Associate, or Full Research Professor:
    1. Doctorate in health and social sciences, education or special education, psychology, disability studies, or related field. ABD in related field may be considered if candidate will have degree in hand by start of appointment.
    2. One year of experience working with persons with disabilities and/or their families.
    3. Excellent written and oral communication skills as evidenced in application materials and interview.
    4. Strong attention to detail as evidenced by application materials.
    5. Strong interpersonal, organization, and administrative skills as evidenced by application materials and interview.
    To be considered at the rank of Associate Research Professor:
    1. Five (5) years of demonstrated successful experience working in a related field.
    2. Certified or credentialed in the related field or as an assistive technology specialist.
    To be considered at the rank of Full Research Professor:
    1. Ten (10) years of demonstrated successful experience working in a related field.
    2. Certified or credentialed in the related field or as an assistive technology specialist.
