    Primary Purpose of Department
    The Department of Mechanical Engineering and Engineering Science nurtures a professional, collaborative and supportive learning community in which all stakeholders (students, faculty, industry sponsors, and partners) can succeed. UNC Charlotte is well known for the breadth and strength of its advanced manufacturing and metrology research group. There is also an emerging strength in advanced battery technologies. The Department of Mechanical Engineering and Engineering Science provides access to state-of-the-art research facilities, including world-class metrology tools and extensive precision engineering production equipment. The Department is home to the internationally recognized Center for Precision Metrology, has strong participation in the College's Energy Production and Infrastructure Center (EPIC), with the University's Center for Freeform Optics (CeFO), and the School of Data Science. A strong candidate is expected to interact with some of these centers and other industry partners.

    Teaching, Advising, Curriculum and Instructional Development - Faculty responsibilities and essential functions with respect to teaching may include but are not limited to: subject matter competence, course design, course presentation, advising and consultation, directing student research, curriculum and instructional development, and grading student work.
    Scholarly Research, Creative, and Other Professional Activities - All tenured and tenure-track faculty are expected to participate in expanding the knowledge base of her/his academic field by conducting research or engaging in other creative activities as appropriate to the faculty member's discipline. Faculty responsibilities and essential functions with respect to research may include but are not limited to: research/creative activity that generates new knowledge and/or synthesizes and/or integrates existing knowledge, publication, an on-going agenda for research, scholarly, and creative activity, and are expected to seek extramural support for their work.
    Service to University, the Public, and the Profession - All tenured and tenure-track faculty are expected to engage in a program of service appropriate to their discipline. Faculty responsibilities and essential functions with respect to service may include but are not limited to: service to the administration and governance of the University, public service, and service to the profession.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities
    The Department of Mechanical Engineering and Engineering Science at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte has multiple tenured/tenure-track faculty positions at all levels (assistant/associate/full). Candidates are sought who either strengthen existing areas of advanced manufacturing, precision metrology, and computational mechanics expertise or extend that expertise to new and emerging areas. Current activities encompass additive and subtractive manufacturing, associated multiscale process modeling, dimensional metrology, and the design of machines, instruments and software for advanced manufacturing capabilities. While not limited to the following, application areas of interest include: optics manufacturing and metrology (freeform optics, diamond turning, etc.), traditional and emerging technologies for energy harvesting and conversion (fuel cells, hydrogen fuel and combustion etc.), biomedical manufacturing, decarbonization of manufacturing processes (improved efficiency and alternative processing routes), and manufacturing processes for decarbonization of energy systems (processing of high temperature alloys and ceramics, and material processing for energy conversion/storage systems). Relevant areas of expertise include manufacturing processes, material process-structure-property relationships, metrology, engineering mechanics, integrated process modeling, and supporting advanced data analytics. Strong candidates in other areas of mechanical engineering will also be given due consideration.
    Minimum Experience/Education

    UNC Charlotte gives primary consideration to the earned doctorate or terminal degree in the teaching discipline or a related discipline.

    Preferred Education, Skills and Experience
    Applicants must hold a Ph.D. degree in Mechanical/Mechatronics/Aerospace/Materials Engineering, Physics, or another closely related field and have a background in existing areas of metrology, manufacturing processes, mechanics or modeling. In addition, they must demonstrate significant accomplishments or outstanding potential in scholarship, teaching, and research, depending on the rank of appointment. Successful candidates are expected to: 1) develop and sustain nationally and internationally recognized, externally funded research programs as evidenced by high-quality publications and successful mentoring of students; and 2) contribute to teaching and curriculum development at both the graduate and undergraduate levels.
