    POSITION SUMMARY


     The Department of Physics and Astronomy at Benedictine College in Atchison, Kansas invites applications for an Assistant Professor beginning August 2024. The ideal candidate will have a Ph.D. in Astronomy or Astrophysics, but exceptional candidates with Ph.D.s in Physics are also encouraged to apply. Review of applications will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled; only complete applications will be considered. Exceptionally qualified candidates will be considered for a tenure track position.


    Benedictine College has a full-time undergraduate enrollment of approximately 2200 students and is a mission-centered academic community. Its mission as a Catholic, Benedictine, liberal arts, and residential college is the education of men and women within a community of faith and scholarship.     The Department of Physics and Astronomy offers a full range of degrees including: B.S., B.A., and Minor in Physics, and B.S. and Minor in Astronomy. The Department currently consists of 5 full time faculty (two astronomers, two physics, and a lab manager), and graduates an average of 5 students per year. Department resources include a campus of observatory used for variable star photometry and spectroscopy research, a laser lab used for AMO physics research, a materials lab used for luminescent solar concentrator research, and an endowed summer internship research program. Benedictine also has a School of Engineering with four ABET accredited degrees and an extensive machine shop. Candidates should include a statement discussing their plans for engaging undergraduates in research.



    Requirements

     

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

    The typical faculty load in the Department of Physics and Astronomy Department is 12 credit hours per semester, including lecture and laboratory courses. The essential responsibilities Assistant Professor will include lower-level general education courses and upper-level courses in physics and astronomy. A tenure-track position will also include directing undergraduate research, and institutional service. Candidates must include a statement of teaching philosophy, including how they would contribute to our liberal arts mission.
