    This is a unique opportunity for a visionary leader to steer the strategic and operational direction as Head for the Department of Languages & Communication at Prairie View A&M University (PVAMU). Achieving R2 designation in 2022, with research expenditures over $105M over the past five years, PVAMU joins the ranks as one of the Top 10 historically black colleges and universities in the nation for research. The successful candidate will continue to advance academic excellence, working with a diverse faculty and staff to foster educational growth and professional opportunities for all students. 

    This is a remarkable chance for the successful candidate to map out an academic vision, innovate and build programs, and implement dynamic learning environments to promote collaboration and increase opportunities for meaningful involvement with both students and faculty. The next Head for the Department will be an adept relationship builder who easily navigates internally across campus and globally with the larger community to lead the department in achieving goals and objectives aligned with the University, System and State. The Head for the Department will be responsible for managing policies and procedures affecting program outcomes and managing research and funding opportunities. They will develop recruitment and marketing plans with input from staff and establish measurable goals and objectives for the department.

    The programs in the Department of Languages & Communication offer students a liberal arts education, emphasizing the acquisition of language and communication skills in English, Spanish, Arabic, and Chinese, as well as advanced knowledge of media techniques. The department currently offers the Bachelor of Arts degree in English and a minor in Spanish and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communication.  

    This position reports to the Dean of the Brailsford College of Arts and Sciences and leads the Department of Languages & Communication. This is a 12-month position at the rank of either Associate or Full Professor. Candidates must be tenure eligible at the time of appointment.

    DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
    • Develops, implements, and evaluates policies and procedures affecting all program outcomes; develops and manages research opportunities and external funding.
    • Handles the administration and management of all administrative support systems required to sustain and improve departmental growth.
    • Provides responses to requested information and on-going implementation of strategies to eliminate audit deficiencies and prevent non-compliance with rules and regulations.
    • Creates a vision and engenders the trust of subordinates, peers, and supervisors; generates revenues for faculty and staff development.
    • Manages and implements the fiscal affairs for the department that are consistent with college and university expectations.
    • Develops recruitment and marketing plans that show evidence of faculty and staff involvement; prioritizes annual expenditures in a manner that supports the College mission; and
    • Establishes measurable goals and objectives aligned with University, System, and State goals for participation, success, excellence, and research.

    • Proven ability to provide vision, training, supervision and leadership.
    • Commitment to working with diverse student populations and fostering undergraduate and graduate student success.
    • Ability to adapt and respond quickly to the changing needs of the department, college and institution.
    • Demonstrated evidence of effective leadership supported by excellent oral/written communication.
    • Must possess sound judgment in decision making and a collaborative spirit with colleagues and leaders.
    • Evidence of highly developed interpersonal and relationship building skills that foster tolerance of multiple perspectives, ethical and participative decision-making, consensus building, and respect for and promotion of diversity.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
    • Earned Doctorate degree in an area offered within the department's long-range plans for degree offerings (i.e., English or Foreign Languages only).  
    • Must be tenure eligible and have demonstrated experience in administration and teaching in higher education or proven equivalent experiences.
    • Evidence of scholarship, research and creative endeavors.
