Associate Dean of Continuing Education assists Dean with the management of administrative functions of the college of continuing education. Collaborates with Dean on planning college strategic initiatives and supports on college fundraising. Being an Associate Dean of Continuing Education provides administrative leadership in areas of curriculum development, institutional assessment and improvement, human resource, faculty development and performance appraisals, budget and finance, and facilities planning and management. Typically requires an advanced degree. Additionally, Associate Dean of Continuing Education typically reports to a Dean. The Associate Dean of Continuing Education typically manages through subordinate managers and professionals in larger groups of moderate complexity. Provides input to strategic decisions that affect the functional area of responsibility. May give input into developing the budget. Capable of resolving escalated issues arising from operations and requiring coordination with other departments.     This position is a full-time administrative faculty position that requires strong organizational and communication skills, and a good sense of humor. The Associate Dean of Students will work closely with the Dean of Students in the areas of residential life, day student life, student attendance and discipline, and community life programming. Strong interpersonal skills are essential to work that sometimes involves difficult conversations with students and families. The Associate Dean of Students should be team oriented in their approach to the work of the Deans’ Office, one that consists of adults who see the best in young people and endeavor to create a kind and inclusive student culture.

    The Associate Dean of Students attends all faculty meetings, acts as an advisor to students, participates in afternoon programming, and serves on evening and weekend duty teams. Strong candidates will have a background teaching and working in residential schools and show a demonstrated enthusiasm for and experience with promoting student growth through mission-aligned community life programming.     The Associate Dean of Students reports to the Dean of Students and provides essential support to the Middlesex community and program.

    Principal Responsibilities:

    •Model the School’s values and standard for professional behavior

    •Maintain a strong understanding of all school rules, policies and expectations, and enforce them on a consistent basis

    •Maintain a presence on campus through robust attendance at community events, including athletic competitions, performances, and School cultural events

    •Promote relationships with peer schools and attend residential school conferences as appropriate to understand best practices in the industry and research improvements in school policies and procedures

    •Serve on Head of House, Community Life, Radar, Rules Revision, and Events Planning Committees

    •Chair the Character Prize Committee

    Student Life Priorities:

    •Assume primary responsibility to facilitate, organize, and participate in Orientation, Senior Leadership Training, Community Life, Choices and Connections, and Class Retreat programming

    •With Dean of Students, establish a system to review and revise student life programming

    •Work with the Director of Strategic Marketing and Communications to establish agendas for the Middlesex Parents’ Association that build off of student life programs

    •Assist Dean of Students in creating the Opening of School Calendar

    •Provide support and direction for student leaders including: coordinating the announcements calendar, designing and supporting weekly student senate meetings, and attending weekly student leader meetings

    •Collaborate with Director of Student Activities and Student Leaders on Pep Rally

    •Work with senior class advisor and Director of Student Activities to organize end of year events for the senior class

    •Bring student issues as appropriate to the Radar Committee

    Boarding and Day Student Administration:

    •With Day Heads of House, establish day student house structure and publish the day student newsletter

    •With Dean of Students, assist with rooming assignments for boarding students

    •With Boarding Heads of House, organize conflict mediations with students

    •Communicate to all students and faculty members weekly evening hour expectations and special schedules

    •Monitor all dorm and evening duty logs on a daily basis and provide appropriate communication and follow up

    •Coordinate summer storage

    Deans’ Office Discipline Processes:

    •Meet with and support students on Attendance Probation, including communicating with families as appropriate

    •Support the investigation process for major discipline as necessary

    •With Dean of Students, establish the calendar for and arrange communication regarding revisions to the Handbook

    •Handle minor discipline issues
