    APPOINTMENT: July 1, 2023

    RESPONSIBILITIES:

    The Dean of the College of Education and Human Services will serve as the Chief Academic Officer for the College and will report to the Provost and Academic Vice President, providing College leadership in the support and implementation of the University's strategic plan, Higher Values in Higher Education. As the Chief Academic Officer for the College, the Dean will be responsible for carrying out and fostering the vision, mission, development, and growth of the College through innovation, collaboration, and inclusivity. The Dean will have an extraordinary opportunity to advance the College's mission, enhance its support for excellence in teaching and research, and promote creative new program development while positioning the College to succeed in a dynamic and highly competitive environment in teacher education and human services. The Dean will lead the College to higher levels of achievement and demonstrate a spirit of innovation, a participatory leadership philosophy, and a deep commitment to the mission of Western Illinois University.

    The Dean will be responsible for managing a budget including personnel and operating funds of a little over $10,000,000 and seeking extramural grants, contracts as well as private and corporate financial support. The Dean will have overall responsibility for planning, developing and evaluating teaching, scholarship and service; recruitment, evaluation, and retention of faculty as well as directing accreditation procedures. In consultation with representative faculty committees, the Dean will carry out the educational policies of the University and College and serve as a representative on standing and ad hoc administrative committees. The Dean will promote a collaborative, collegial environment based on open communication and shared governance and will be committed to fostering and maintaining a diverse and inclusive campus environment. The Dean will also coordinate the activities of assistant and associate deans, department chairs/directors and support staff.

    Requirements:

    REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
    • The successful candidate will have an earned doctorate in a degree that is represented in one of the academic departments in the college from a regionally accredited university.*
    • A distinguished record of teaching and scholarly or creative accomplishments and public service to justify a tenured appointment at the rank of professor is required.
    • The successful candidate will also have a distinguished record of:
    • administrative experience with strategic planning
    • efficient and strategic fiscal management
    • ability to acquire external resources through fundraising, grants, and contracts
    • fostering a collaborative, inclusive, and innovative community for students, faculty, and staff
    • the ability to work collaboratively and communicate effectively with multiple constituencies to promote and support a collegial environment, open communication, and shared governance
    • proactive commitment to the recruitment, advancement, and retention of a diverse community of students, faculty, and staff, including but not limited to, historically marginalized populations
    • experience managing accreditation and strengthening affiliations with appropriate professional and academic organizations
    • development, evaluation, assessment, and accreditation of graduate and undergraduate academic programs
    • demonstrated experience in academic innovation
    • excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
    • Experience in holding the position as an academic administrator at the level of department chair, dean, or equivalent
