    The College of Liberal Arts (CLA) consists of 17 academic departments and programs, and approximately 350 faculty, 70 staff, and 3,400 students in 18 undergraduate majors and 4 graduate programs. The CLA includes disciplines that represent four broad areas of knowledge: the fine and performing arts, communications, the humanities, and the social sciences. In addition to offering courses for its own majors, CLA offers a significant proportion of courses in general education, as well as courses that support minors and serve as electives for all majors throughout the university. Further, the CLA plays a significant role in providing activities that enhance the cultural and intellectual environment of the campus, including exhibits and performances offered by our academic departments (e.g., Art, Music, Theatre & Dance) and Cal Poly Arts, cultural programs and lecture series offered by all of our departments, and co-curricular programs such as KCPR Radio, Mustang Daily, and Model UN.

    Reporting to the Dean of the College of Liberal Arts, the Associate Dean for Diversity and Curriculum is a key member of the Dean's leadership/management team, working with the Dean, the Associate Dean for Student Success, the Associate Dean for Operations, department chairs, and the Director of Advancement to develop and implement the vision and goals of the college. The Associate Dean for Diversity and Curriculum also interfaces with senior management in the divisions of Academic Affairs, Student Affairs, the Office of Diversity and Inclusion, and other offices as appropriate. The new Associate Dean for Diversity and Curriculum will play a key role in supporting the college leadership in leading, creating, and enhancing initiatives, policies, and practices related to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). Additionally, the Associate Dean for Diversity and Curriculum is responsible for the college’s Diversity Action Plan and leads the CLA Faculty and Student Diversity Committees. Other duties include managing the Curriculum process at the college level, including course and program approval, and leading the college in assessment planning in accordance with university accreditation competencies.

    Under the direction of the Dean, the Associate Dean for Diversity and Curriculum assumes general responsibilities that include: providing vision, leadership and coordination of the CLA Multicultural Scholars Program and Underrepresented Student Network; managing the Access, Community, and Equity (ACE) program; working collaboratively with the CLA chairs to achieve continuous improvement in the multiple dimensions of DEI; assisting with personnel and student matters related to DEI; developing and maintaining collaborative relationships with faculty, staff and students to support the College’s mission and goals; conducting faculty and staff evaluations, as appropriate; staying in close contact with the Office of University Diversity and Inclusion to provide information to the college; representing the college on various university committees as assigned by the Dean; representing the Dean at functions when Dean is absent, as requested; and carrying out all additional responsibilities as assigned by the Dean as appropriate to the position.  

    Salary Range: $145,000 - $165,000

     

    DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    The following examples illustrate typical work activities and are not meant to be all inclusive or restrictive:

    ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS - Daily 90%

    Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI)

    • Provide leadership for the college in its efforts to sustain continuous and innovative improvement in the area of diversity, equity, and inclusion and to contribute to university DEI-related initiatives. 
    • Oversee and coordinate the CLA Faculty Diversity Committee and the CLA Student Diversity Committee.
    • Generate recommendations to the dean regarding DEI goals, best practices, development of policies and assessment plans (including maintaining and updating the college’s Diversity Action Plan). 
    • Oversee and coordinate the college’s ACE stipend program, Underrepresented Students Network, Multicultural Scholars Program, the USN x MSP Student Lounge.
    • Work with the college communications team to represent the college’s values of DEI in all communications.
    • Under the direction of the dean, coordinate the college’s DEI endeavors with university efforts, including the Office of University Diversity and Inclusion and Academic Affairs as a whole.

    Curriculum

    • Serve as the Dean’s level of review for curriculum proposals, including confirmation of resource availability for new programs and classes.
    • Alongside the Chair of the College Curriculum Committee, coordinate the curriculum review cycle.
    • Work with other campus entities (e.g., Academic Programs and Planning, Academic Senate Curriculum Committee, General Education, Catalog, University and CLA Advising) on college-related curricular issues.
    • Collaborate on University-led assessment initiatives and procedures, including work with the CLA Assessment Council.

    OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS - As Needed 10%

    • Perform other job-related duties and special projects as assigned.
    • Attend training and maintain skill currency as appropriate to safely and effectively complete assignments.

     

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

    EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

    • Ph.D. or terminal degree from an accredited college or university,
    • Academic record that satisfies eligibility for appointment to the rank of full professor in an academic department related to those in the College of Liberal Arts.

    REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS (SKAs):

    • Demonstrated knowledge of literature, research, and best practices in the areas of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI).
    • Experience in facilitating an equitable education or workplace experience for underrepresented students, staff, and faculty.
    • Demonstrated leadership performance in an academic institution.
    • Demonstrated university teaching experience.
    • Experience with curriculum development.
    • Demonstrated experience in a professional setting that required a very high level of cultural competence/humility, diplomacy, and professionalism.
    • Ability to use tact, diplomacy, and conflict management skills to effectively handle a broad range of high level and sensitive interpersonal situations with people from a variety of backgrounds, personalities, and to respond appropriately to difficult personnel issues.
    • Ability to initiate, establish, and foster communication and teamwork and maintain effective working relationships with those from various cultural backgrounds and communities.
    • Experience working with different units across an organization or university in a collaborative manner.
    • Experience with measurement/assessment including development of metrics and utilization of data in policy and programming decisions.
    • Ability to effectively communicate information in a clear and understandable manner, both verbally and in writing.
    • Ability to interpret, communicate, analyze, and apply policies and procedures, as well as to identify and address inequitable barriers.
    • Demonstrated ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality.
    • Excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to set own priorities to coordinate multiple assignments with fluctuating and time-sensitive deadlines.
    • Excellent computer skills and proficiency with a variety of computer applications.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

    • Working knowledge of or ability to quickly learn University infrastructure, policies, and procedures.

    SPECIAL CONDITIONS:

    • This position is classified as an Administrator III (class code 3307).
    • This position consists of 100% administrative duties without any teaching duties.
    • Must be willing to travel and attend training programs off-site for occasional professional development.
    • Must be able to work overtime, occasional holidays, and adjust working hours to meet special jobs.  May be called back periodically to perform work as needed on an emergency basis.
    • The person holding this position is considered a 'mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment. 
    • Full-time MPP employees are required to disclose outside employment at time of hire or within 30 days of taking additional outside employment subsequent to time of hire.
