Pratt Munson College of Art and Design is an NASAD accredited foundation college art program, created through an affiliation between Munson, Utica, NY, and Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, NY. Students do their first two foundation years of a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at here at our campus and then matriculate to the Brooklyn campus for completion. The campus houses approximately 170 students majoring in Fine Arts, Communications Design, Photography, and Art and Design Education.

The Dean, Pratt Munson College of Art and Design will be an exceptional, dynamic, and resourceful leader who is committed to excellence in arts education and to embedding diversity, equity, and inclusion into all aspects of Pratt Munson. Pratt Munson, located in Utica, New York, is an affiliate of Pratt Institute and offers the first two years of a Pratt BFA. Upon completion of their sophomore year, students relocate to Brooklyn where they complete their final two years of study at Pratt Institute. Pratt Munson College of Art and Design is a division of the parent arts organization Munson. Founded in 1919, Munson also includes a nationally recognized Museum of Art and an active Performing Arts program.
The Dean of Pratt Munson College of Art and Design reports to the President and CEO of Munson and is the chief administrative/academic officer of the College of Art and Design and Munson’s Community Arts program. The Dean provides leadership for faculty and staff to offer high-quality educational services for students at Pratt Munson and Munson Community Arts programming. The Dean directs admissions, financial aid, academics, student life, faculty, and staff for both programs.
As part of the senior leadership team, the Dean works collaboratively with Munson’s Administration and its seven divisional directors (Treasurer, Museum of Art, Performing Arts, Marketing and Communications, Development, Facilities/Safety, and HR) to develop initiatives within the College of Art and Design and achieve educational goals and objectives that align with Munson’s strategic plan.
Serving as the College of Art and Design’s advocate, the Dean will lead assessments and forecasting for curriculum, resources, and facilities to maintain and advance programming and build agility. The Dean brings leadership in planning, setting priorities, program development, and fiscal management. The position oversees all 14 full-time faculty. Six departments also report to the Dean—Community Arts, Admissions, Financial Aid, Student Life, Registrar, and Library Services—as well as the Chair of Academic Affairs and the Chair of Foundations. The Chair of Academic Affairs recruits and oversees adjunct faculty.

Essential Job Functions
Building on Pratt Munson’s mission and Munson’s strategic plan, the Dean will:
serve as a collaborative leader who ensures the College of Art and Design implements its strategic goals while promoting open dialogue and communications, professionalism, and integrity among academic departments, staff, students, faculty, and administrators;
optimize the College’s joint credit program with Pratt Institute by ensuring academically excellent student learning that is in alignment with Pratt’s curriculum, and by supporting Student Life’s efforts to provide high-quality campus experiences for all students;
in conjunction with Pratt Institute, plan and oversee annual student admissions strategies, financial aid, and related staff recruitment efforts to ensure full enrollment of 200 students and optimize the retention rate;
advocate for and lead curricular, resource, and facilities assessment and forecasting to maintain and advance programming and build agility;
Manage key Pratt Munson metrics, including new student enrollment, retention, operating budget, and Community Arts;
support partnerships and collaborations with regional community organizations in support of College activities;
work with the President and Treasurer to develop and monitor the College’s annual operating budget (including salaries, capital expenses, financial aid, scholarships, and other expenses) to ensure financial stability;
represent the College of Art and Design to the Board of Trustees, its Pratt Munson Advisory Committee, and to students, parents, and community;
participate in developing and executing the vision and strategic direction of the parent organization, Munson;
provide leadership for the faculty through recruitment, hiring, professional development, and evaluation practices designed to establish and maintain a high level of skills and instruction;
participate and cooperate with all divisions and departments (including interdivisional committees, programs, and activities) to fulfill the mission and goals of Munson as well as the Pratt Munson program;
maintain and strengthen Munson’s Community Arts programs to provide quality instruction for a wide variety of interests and aptitudes while ensuring financial growth;
promote the College of Art and Design’s national and regional reputation through work with the Pratt Institue’s Enrollment Office, Munson’s Communications division, and serve as the Pratt Munson’s chief spokesperson, promoting the national and regional reputation of its programming; and
work with the Munson Development office to initiate fundraising strategies for the College of Art and Design through alumni, community, and corporate support.
Organizational Service
The Dean will serve on Munson intra-departmental committees, participate in Munson community events, attend Munson and Pratt Munson events, represent Munson in the community, and complete other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
Qualifications: A proven energetic and collaborative leader; appropriate terminal degree; demonstrated administrative experience in exercising leadership and participatory decision-making in higher education; experience with key aspects of curriculum development, budget activities, enrollment, facilities, and equipment and new technologies; demonstrated teaching ability in higher education; and a strong record of scholarly and/or creative activities. Experience with fundraising/grant writing and community-based funding is preferred.
Skills and Experience
The Dean of the Pratt Munson College of Art and Design will:
be an experienced professional with a record of successful, motivational administrative achievements in an accredited college of art or similar setting (3 years of program/department/divisional leadership experience preferred);
be a team leader who motivates and challenges creative, talented faculty and staff in an open and collaborative environment to develop and implement programs that strengthen and advance the College, support the culture of Munson, and create a positive and effective work environment;
be experienced, strategic and thoughtful in addressing recruitment, enrollment, retention, and related admissions issues, policies, and processes;
possess exemplary fiscal management capabilities for all aspects of the divisional budget, including salaries, equipment, and classroom/studio needs and managerial acumen to see projects through to completion, with attention to detail and respectful of deadlines; and
be a superior communicator with interpersonal skills that reflect clarity of expression and effectiveness in working with diverse groups in a complex organizational setting.
Supervisory Responsibilities
The Dean of the College of Art and Design has direct supervisory responsibilities for hiring, termination, performance appraisals or performance counseling.
Working Environment and Hours: The Dean of the College of Art and Design will regularly stand, walk, bend, stoop, reach, sit, and may lift and carry materials for intermittent periods of time throughout the day. Significant portions of daily assignments involve the application of manual skills requiring motor coordination in combination with finger dexterity. Work regularly requires and/or varies between morning, afternoon, evening and/or weekend assignments.
