Associate Dean of Humanities assists Dean with the management of administrative functions of the college of humanities. Collaborates with Dean on planning college strategic initiatives and supports on college fundraising. Being an Associate Dean of Humanities provides administrative leadership in areas of curriculum development, institutional assessment and improvement, human resource, faculty development and performance appraisals, budget and finance, and facilities planning and management. Typically requires an advanced degree. Additionally, Associate Dean of Humanities typically reports to a Dean. The Associate Dean of Humanities typically manages through subordinate managers and professionals in larger groups of moderate complexity. Provides input to strategic decisions that affect the functional area of responsibility. May give input into developing the budget. Capable of resolving escalated issues arising from operations and requiring coordination with other departments.     Office of Student Conflict Resolution


    Primary Position Function/Summary

    The Associate Dean of Students and Director of the Office for Student Conflict Resolution (OSCR) is a full time academic professional staff member reporting to the Associate Vice Chancellor/Dean of Student Support and Advocacy (Dean of Students). The Associate Dean of Students/Director's principal responsibilities include day-to-day direction and leadership for OSCR, including the student conduct system and alternative conflict resolution services.


    Duties & Responsibilities


    Student Conduct & Conflict Resolution Oversight

    • Apply state and federal laws, federal regulations, and sub regulatory guidance to the investigation and adjudication of student conduct matters.
    • Administer the Student Code and the daily operation of the student conduct system, which includes acting as an appeal officer, advising panel hearings, and investigating cases (including allegations of sexual misconduct).
    • Promote moral and ethical development, social justice and responsibility, and good citizenship in a diverse society.
    • Promote the security and safety of students and exercise appropriate procedures for crisis and risk management.
    • Assist with and organize orientation and training programs for members of the Senate Committee on Student Discipline and the subcommittees on student conduct.
    • Advise administrative officers and their staffs with respect to procedures and policies of the Senate Committee on Student Discipline and its subcommittees; propose changes in alignment with best practices and regulatory guidance.
    • Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of the intake and resolution of cases.
    • Maintain all records of student conflict resolution cases (discipline and mediation); conduct studies as requested.


    Support & Collaboration Efforts


    • Develop collaborative relationships with academic unit administrators, the Office of University Counsel, law enforcement agencies, student advocacy groups, and external community members.
    • Maintain effective referral mechanisms to other departments and offices, including the Student Assistance Center; Student Legal Services; the Counseling Center; and local police agencies.
    • Maintain effective partnerships with the University of Illinois Police Department and other local law enforcement agencies.
    • Provide staff assistance to the Senate Committee on Student Discipline and to its subordinate bodies.
    • Serve as chair of the criminal history/disciplinary history review committee for Undergraduate Admissions and the Graduate College.
    • Consult with members of the university community on student disciplinary matters.
    • Meet with students and other constituents to address sensitive issues.
    • Serve as a member of the university’s threat assessment team.


    Administrative Functions

    • Direct the daily operation of OSCR including the planning, training, compliance, outreach, reporting, assessment, and research efforts of the unit.
    • Provide leadership and supervision of staff.
    • Represent the Dean of Students as requested/needed in university functions, meetings, etc.
    • Serve in rotation as an on-call emergency dean for after-hours issues and crises.
    • Undertake other duties consistent with the position as assigned.


    Education

    Required:

    • Master's degree in student affairs, higher education administration, or other related field.

    Preferred:

    • Preferred Education: Ph.D., J.D., or other terminal degree.


    Experience

    Required:

    • At least five (5) years professional experience in student conduct administration.
    • Ability to conduct investigations, document findings, and maintain case files.
    • Thorough knowledge of sexual misconduct case management, conflict management and resolution, restorative justice, ethics, and legal parameters.
    • Excellent administrative and organizational skills, including the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously; strong attention to detail and accuracy.
    • Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
    • Demonstrated knowledge of relevant higher education regulations that impact student conduct including, but not limited to, FERPA, Title IX, VAWA, and the Clery Act.
    • Threat assessment experience.
    • Title IX investigative experience.
    • Capability of establishing and maintaining effective cooperative working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and members of the public.
    • Knowledge of student organization conduct processes.
    • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with other university offices.
    • Experience and/or training in forms of conflict resolution include coaching, mediation, facilitated dialogues, and restorative justice
    Preferred:
    • Supervision of professional staff.
    • Use of student conduct software (e.g., Symplicity; Maxient).
    • Use of threat assessment structured professional judgment tools (e.g., Cawood Assessment and Response Grids or the Workplace Assessment of Violence Risk).


    Appointment Information



    This is a 100% full-time Academic Professional position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after 1/3/2023. Salary for this position starts at $90,000 commensurate with experience and qualifications.
