Required Skills and Certifications:

• Actively licensed to practice in Kansas or Missouri with a willingness to become licensed in the other
• Courtroom experience (not required but desired)

Duties & Expectations:

• Up to 30 hours in the beginning, with the potential to take a full-time position
• In-office from 10am - 3pm Monday through Thursday
• All aspects of litigation including trial work
• Ability to handle a diverse range of cases from state municipal court defense work, to civil replevin actions, to federal cases

Principal Responsibilities:

• Self-driven caseload
• Managing your own litigation calendar
• Drafting pleadings
• Preparing discovery and participating in depositions
• Trial work
• Desire to advocate for animals and underserved populations
• Interest in the intersectionality of poverty, housing, and animals
• Civil claims and litigation
• Municipal criminal defense

Work Description:

Barnett Law Office LLC., is a small but renowned firm specializing in animal law. We are a close-knit team based in Lawrence, Kansas, dedicated to the representation of owners and their animals, licensed animal shelters, occasionally representing the State in special prosecution cases, and other animal-related matters. We are looking for an Associate Attorney who is motivated by advocacy. We are a public interest law firm working tirelessly for our clients. We work to affect change in a variety of ways whether it is case law, legislative advocacy, or through general policy work.

Salary commensurate with experience.

Job Type: Part-time

Pay: $55.00 - $90.00 per hour

Expected hours: 20 – 30 per week
