It was the first academic health center in Texas and is home to the state’s first schools of medicine, nursing, and allied health sciences.     The UTMB Department of Family Medicine was founded as an independent department in 1971 but existed prior to that as a division of the Department of Preventive Medicine and Population Health. Family Medicine faculty provide medical care to Galveston County residents through its three clinics, located on the UTMB Galveston campus, on the western end of Galveston Island, and in Dickinson, Texas, and through its inpatient service at the new Jennie Sealy Hospital in Galveston, Texas. Additional services are rendered at the Gulf Health Care Center nursing home and the Galveston County Health District's Coastal Health & Wellness. At present the Department includes programs in medical student education, residency, faculty development, and research.

     

    The Vice Chair for Research will have an MD, DO or PhD and effort will be joint between Academic Affairs of the UTMB John Sealy School of Medicine and the Department of Family Medicine. Working with the department chair of family medicine, and as part of the departmental leadership team, the Vice-Chair for Research will be responsible for setting the research agenda for the department and will lead, mentor and assist Family Medicine faculty and resident physicians in developing research projects, organizing and operationalizing data and publishing findings in peer reviewed manuscripts. Experience with clinical trials, quantitative, qualitative and mixed methods study design is preferred as is extramural funding in a personal program of research.  The Vice Chair for Research will collaborate with leaders within, and external to, the department of family medicine to drive faculty curiosity and create a research culture that is strategic and innovative. The successful candidate will have demonstrated the ability to build collaborative research relationships with a diverse group of academic, health system, and community partners.

     

    The Vice Chair for Research will have an MD, DO or PhD and effort will be 60% time in Family Medicine and 40% time in Academic Affairs. Details of the research role includes 60% research effort to identify funding opportunities to advance clinical, translational, workforce and educational research, as well as continue pursuit of their own research interest. Academic Affairs duties include the following: Assist in the revision, development, maintenance, management, and execution of JSSOM’s educational programs and resources related to student research and scholarly productivity. Deliver high-quality educational sessions (lectures, workshops, PBL, TBL, CBL) to medical students and faculty promoting active learning and critical thinking related to evidence-based medicine and research methods. Guide faculty in the development and implementation of scholarly activities related to health services, population/public health research, and/or public health initiatives.  Collaborate with educational leadership to enhance and improve the quality and effectiveness of the medical education program and improve opportunities for implementing changes based on feedback and outcome data analysis.  Engage in medical education research and participate in scholarly activities.  Advise and mentor students and faculty on research interests, research opportunities, and in research settings. Serve on various JSSOM committees and participate in the admissions process.
