Position Summary
As a key contributor to William & Mary Law School’s Office of Career Services, the Assistant Dean for Career Services provides William & Mary Law School’s students and alumni with guidance regarding career planning, job search strategy, and professional development. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- individual and group career advising;
- resume and cover letter review;
- interview preparation;
- creation and delivery of career- and professional development-related programs and workshops;
- active engagement in the activities of the National Association for Law Placement; and
- participation in alumni, bar association, and other professional networking events.
The Assistant Dean may also be expected to serve as an instructor for the Law School’s 1L Leadership and Professional Development course.
This position reports to the Associate Dean for Career Services.
Conditions of Employment
This position may require additional hours beyond the typical work week, to include occasional overnight and weekend work as needed to meet the business needs of the office.

Required Qualifications
- Juris Doctor or equivalent combination of relevant education and experience (such as professional experience in law practice, legal recruiting/lawyer professional development, law school career services, or graduate/undergraduate career counseling).
- Knowledge of career counseling and career development theory and practice, or demonstrate the ability to develop that knowledge through continuing education and on-the-job training.
- Knowledge of legal career opportunities, alternative professional career opportunities for law graduates, and employment trends in the legal profession, and/or demonstrated ability to quickly develop that knowledge through continuing education and on-the-job training.
- Ability to work effectively on an independent basis and as part of a team.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills, including frequent public speaking.
- Demonstrated ability to build constructive relationships with diverse constituencies, including students, graduates, employer representatives, bar/professional associations, faculty, administrators, and staff.
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities and work under pressure in an extremely busy environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- A JD is strongly preferred.
- Proficiency with using technology for career counseling, program development, and marketing/ outreach to students, graduates, and employers.
- Knowledge of how to successfully use various social media platforms, including, but not limited to, LinkedIn, Twitter and Instagram, for networking and communication purposes.

Advertised Pay Range
$65,000 - $85,000
Advertised Pay Range Statement
All hiring rates are commensurate with relevant experience up to the advertised amount considering internal alignment.
