Associate Dean of Sciences assists Dean with the management of administrative functions of the college of science. Collaborates with Dean on planning college strategic initiatives and supports on college fundraising. Being an Associate Dean of Sciences provides administrative leadership in areas of curriculum development, institutional assessment and improvement, human resource, faculty development and performance appraisals, budget and finance, and facilities planning and management. Typically requires an advanced degree. Additionally, Associate Dean of Sciences typically reports to a Dean. The Associate Dean of Sciences typically manages through subordinate managers and professionals in larger groups of moderate complexity. Provides input to strategic decisions that affect the functional area of responsibility. May give input into developing the budget. Capable of resolving escalated issues arising from operations and requiring coordination with other departments.     Under limited supervision, performs supervisory and administrative tasks in developing, implementing, and managing programs designed to effectively address security and school safety needs. The employee is responsible for coordinating a comprehensive school safety program, which includes working with local law enforcement agencies and the School Resource Officer.  Employees should have specialized training in security and experience working with school-age children and employees.

    Duties and Responsibilities

    • Ability to act as liaison with the School Resource Officer (SRO).
    • Accepts requests and inquiries from the public for the Principal and SRO to handle.
    • Monitors school buildings, classrooms, restrooms, and buses.
    • Operates handheld and walk-through metal detectors.
    • Provides security to all persons during special events, especially after-school activities.
    • Provides crowd control.
    • Maintains accurate records on students and activities.
    • Confers with School Administration, School Security Compliance Manager, and Assistant Superintendent for Operations to develop and execute safety plans.
    • Must be willing to ride a school bus as a monitor, if needed.
    • Assists students in boarding and leaving the bus safely.
    • Required to attend all after-school activities.
    • Keeps school administration informed at all times.
    • Works with local law enforcement agencies during critical situations.
    • Other duties as assigned.

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

    • Considerable knowledge of state and local policies and procedures regarding the administration of security/school safety programs. 
    • Considerable knowledge of applicable laws and regulations. 
    • Considerable knowledge of the current literature, trends, methods, and developments in the areas of security and school safety. 
    • Considerable knowledge of the ethical guidelines applicable to the position as outlined by professional organizations and/or federal, state, and local laws, rules, and regulations.
    • General knowledge of the principles of supervision, organization, and administration.
    • Ability to maintain complete and accurate records and to develop meaningful reports from them; able to present understandable reports to a variety of audiences.
    • Ability to effectively express ideas orally and in writing.
    • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a wide variety of audiences as necessitated by work assignments.
    • Possess knowledge of school behavior guidelines.
    • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.
    • Knowledge of appropriate responses for emergency situations.
    • Understands the growth and development of assigned students.

    Physical Requirements

    • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear and taste or smell. The employee frequently is required to stand and walk. 
    • The employee is occasionally required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; and, climb or balance. 
    • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
    • Must be physically able to operate a motor vehicle.
    • Must be able to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body.
    • Medium work usually requires walking, running, or standing to a significant degree.
    • Must be able to communicate via the telephone.

    Education and Licenses

    • Possession of or ability to obtain an appropriate, valid, driver’s license.
    • Minimum of high school diploma or GED.
    • Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, preferred.

    Classification: Non-exempt

    Salary:  Grade 60, Step 00 (Entry-level)
