Associate Dean of Undergraduate Programs assists Dean with the management of administrative functions of an undergraduate program. The University of New Mexico (UNM), School of Medicine (UNM SOM), Office of Undergraduate Medical Education seeks to recruit a faculty member in a part-time capacity (.80 FTE) as the Associate Dean of Undergraduate Medical Education who will report to the Senior Associate Dean for Education. The remaining 0.20 FTE in the candidate’s department. We are seeking an Associate or Full Professor open track. This position is available beginning October 1, 2023, and a later date can be negotiated, as needed, for the successful applicant.
Summary of Position Description:
The Associate Dean has the authority and responsibility for oversight and management of all processes pertaining to development, implementation, evaluation, and improvement of the medical student curriculum, and for supervising staff and faculty working in these programs. The Associate Dean represents the UNM SOM administration in working with faculty committees responsible for curriculum oversight and student outcomes.
Job Duties and Responsibilities included but not limited to the following:
1. Administrative and professional oversight of faculty and staff in the Office of Undergraduate Medical Education (UME) and its divisions. In the current academic year, this includes five faculty as part-time deans/directors and 16 full-time staff, with direct supervision of four management staff.
a. Assistant Dean of Foundational Medical Sciences and Assistant Dean of Clinical Education
b. Academic Multimedia Services
c. Assessment and Learning (and the Standardized Patient Program)
d. Curriculum Support Services and Preceptorship
e. Data and Database Management
f. Program Evaluation, Education and Research
2. Lead LCME re-accreditation efforts (policy assessment and revision; data collection instrument preparation, revision, and review; coordinate self-study and Independent Student Analysis; etc.)
3. Mentor faculty directors and management-level staff in administration and current educational methods
4. Develop and manage UME budget in collaboration with Office of Education staff
5. Recruit and train faculty as block chairs and thread leaders, and allocate funding to provide protected time for their activities
6. Recruit faculty for the Core Faculty Program and the Professional Development Program, and allocate funding to provide protected time for their activities
7. Participate in Phase I block planning meetings (20 courses 5 WISE (Wellness, Integration, Step I preparation and Education) weeks)
8. Meet one-on-one with faculty as needed for mentoring, recruitment, or problem-solving
9. Provide professional guidance for the Mentored Scholarly Project (in collaboration with the Assistant Dean of Foundational Medical Sciences)
10. Participate in other UNM SOM or HSC committees: LCME Committee on Quality Improvement, Student Success & Support Committee, Phase I Block Chairs, Phase II Clerkship Directors, Curriculum Committee, UME DEI Curriculum Committee, HSC Academic IT Advisory Committee
11. Provide information and consultation to other UNM SOM/HSC groups as needed (Admissions Committee, Learning Communities mentors, Office of Medical Student Affairs, Learning Environment Office, Curriculum Committee, Office of Community Affairs, Office of Faculty Affairs, Office of the Dean, HSC Office of Academic Affairs, Office for Professional Well-Being, Office for Continuous Professional Learning)
12. Serve as liaison to UNM Main Campus and to AAMC for curriculum information and evaluation (UNM Kuali Curriculum repository, annual CARC report on curriculum outcomes)
13. Participation in planning and attendance at annual events including New Student Orientation, White Coat Ceremony, Match & Awards Ceremony, Convocation
14. Engage with current literature and trends in medical education
