    Job Summary

    The Associate Director, Nutrition and Food Services for UCSF Medical Center at Mission Bay has overall responsibility for planning, initiating, and managing all functions of the nutrition and food services at the Medical Center's hospitals and clinics at the Mission Bay campus. The Associate Director is responsible for advocating for nutrition and food services at the Mission Bay campus and coordinating operations with the other department campuses.

    The incumbent is responsible for planning and leading initiatives to ensure optimal organizational effectiveness. These include the following.

    • Developing a clear departmental vision and mission consistent with those of the Medical Center, and for ensuring that staff members understand their role in achieving the vision and mission.
    • Working with staff to set goals and measurable performance standards to ensure that goals are met. (Performance standards will include national benchmarking with industry standards as well as internally developed standards). Performance improvement projects are developed and implemented to effectively address any identified problems.
    • Ensuring that the department complies with all nutrition, food service, and dietetic education standards developed by licensing and accrediting agencies
    Ensuring that performance standards are developed for managers, supervisors, dietitians, and other staff, and working with managers across campus and other department units to develop action plans to assist all employees in meeting these standards.
    • Projecting, controlling, and complying with budgetary standards, maintaining fiscal responsibility for revenues, expenses, and FTE expenditures for UCSF Medical Center at Mission Bay. Annual budgets are consistent with established goals developed by the department. When the budget is not consistent with goals, the incumbent informs department leadership about any consequences of budget decisions. Steps are taken to ensure that all department managers understand their responsibilities for adhering to approved budgets. The Associate Director tracks, monitors, controls, and reports on costs every month.
    Actively supports and participates in teaching dietetic interns as well as working with the Internship Director to coordinate operational and educational goals of the department.
    • Supports nutrition-related research projects and publications of dietitians. Works collaboratively with others in the Medical Center to develop and implement research projects that will enhance patient care. Publishes papers that are relevant and useful to others.
    • Participates in professional activities that are relevant to the job and expertise. Professional activities reflect participation across disciplines and with individuals and organizations within the organization and at both local and national levels (e.g., editorial boards, government committees, etc.)

    Please note: The compensation ranges listed online for roles not covered by a bargaining unit agreement are very wide, however, a job offer will typically fall in the range of 80% - 120% of the established mid-point. An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.

    For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.

    Department Description

    The UCSF Health Department of Nutrition and Food Services is a high performing and nationally recognized food and nutrition service operation. The department is comprised of three divisions: food service (room service style patient food service, retail food operations including cafes, quick service coffee outlets, a large-scale catering program with conference services, with supporting entities of culinary services, food procurement services, and a business office), retail services (gift and specialty shops), and nutrition services (inpatient and outpatient nutrition services for adults and pediatrics and a dietetic internship). The entities are primarily based at the three UCSF Health hospital campuses but also at clinics throughout the Bay Area. The total department has approximately 360 FTE with an overall operating budget of $54M.

    Required Qualifications

    • Bachelor's degree in management, nutrition, health care administration, or another related field
    • Minimum of 7 - 10 years of experience in a leadership role in a large, hospital-based department
    • Registered Dietitian with the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics
    • Experience teaching dietetic interns or other students
    • Evidence of professional growth and effective leadership
    • Demonstrated ability to successfully manage complex personnel problems and a union environment
    • This position requires flexibility to orient and work in all UCSF Medical Center locations as needed

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Experience an urban, multi-site health system
    • Academic Medical Center-related experience

    License/Certification

    • Current registration (RD) with the Commission on Dietetic Registration is required.
