    Position Summary:

    The Associate Director of Veteran Services serves as a leader on campus who specializes in and provides academic, cultural, educational, and social programming for students who identify as a veteran, active duty service member, reservist, guard member, or dependent. The Associate Director aids military affiliated students in their transition from military life to student life, incorporating them into the intellectual and social life of the institution. The position reports to the Director of Veterans Services.
    The Associate Director works to:
    Utilize current student learning development, military and veteran culture research, and intersectionality theories, DEI values, and current trend data to provide support and direction to faculty, staff, and to enhance the educational experience of military affiliated students on a predominately non­military affiliated campus.
    Contribute to student success by providing direct student support services and maintaining meaningful relationships with students, faculty, staff, and other constituents within UNC, the Greeley community, federal and state government entities, and national organizations to ensure collaborative partnerships, effective programming efforts, and comprehensive support to military affiliated students.
    Serve as a liaison and ambassador of UNC among external stakeholders to support military affiliated student enrollment.
    Provide academic and social support services as well as activities, which enhance university-wide efforts to recruit, support, and graduate students who identify as military affiliated.
    Assess and evaluate student interests, university processes and direction, and the current societal environment to select events, speakers, and programs, which enhance the academic environment and align with the academic plan, mission and values of UNC.
    Train, advise, and evaluate Veterans Services undergraduate and graduate staff in effective organizational management, planning, and program coordination.
    Assist and support the Director in budget maintenance to create and maintain accurate fiscal processes.
    Stay abreast of current state and federal statutes, laws, and legislative actions as well as policies set forth by the Department of Veterans Affairs, Department of Defense, and accrediting agencies that may affect military affiliated students.
    Staff members within the Division of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion are expected to positively contribute to our mission of supporting students in the co-curricular environment and provide an experience that inspires students academically, intellectually, personally, and emotionally. With the diversity of our students in mind, we use a career readiness approach and social justice framework while fostering a culture and climate of CARE.

    Job Duties:

    Leadership and Vision (15%)
    -Create an inclusive environment that responds to today’s students and helps make Veteran Services a place for all students and all campus community
    -Work closely with the Director of Veterans Services to implement the vision for Veterans Services in its role as a university-sponsored center that contributes to the mission and vision of the -University and Division of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.
    -Implement long- and short-term strategic plans that guide Veterans Services operations and contribute to the long-term stability of the unit.
    -Conduct evaluations and assess program efficacy through formal program review and other ongoing assessment activities.

    Student Learning and Education (35%)
    -Ensure diversity, equity, and inclusion practices are utilized in training, programming, and operational aspects to create a welcoming campus for all students regardless of where they are in the spectrum of knowledge in this area.
    -Work closely with the Director of Veterans Services to design and deliver programs and services that aim to address student achievement and establish learning outcomes to address the interests and needs of students, with a particular focus on military affiliated students.
    -Work with individual students, in collaboration with the Office of the Registrar, regarding their eligibility under the various veteran education programs.
    -Assist individuals, in collaboration with the Office of the Registrar, in applying for Department of Veterans Affairs and Department of Defense education benefits.
    -Promote student development and student learning through mentorship and leadership opportunities offered through Veterans Services programs, including student clubs and organizations.
    -Work closely with Veterans Services Director to develop, implement and assess Veterans Services student learning outcomes (SLOs), in line with the mission of Veterans Services, the DEI Division, and the UNC Rowing, Not Drifting 2030 Strategic Plan.
    -Plan and implement programs and events that provide a sense of place for all students and coordinate specific campus wide events such as community development programs and celebratory events (Welcome Briefing, Freedom 5K, Military Dinner, Military Appreciation events with Athletics, and Veterans Day for example).
    -Provide education and military cultural competency training for students, faculty and staff at the university on a regular basis through workshops, including UNC’s UNITE program.

    Administrative Responsibilities (25%)
    -Ensure diversity, equity, and inclusion practices are implemented in all administrative responsibilities.
    -Hire, direct, support, evaluate, and supervise student staff, including graduate and undergraduate students.
    -Develop, maintain, and distribute print and electronic communication materials (i.e., program brochures, website, social media, etc.) that inform and educate internal and external audiences about Veterans Services and its services.
    -Assist with the preparation of annual reports documenting progress towards Veterans Services' long- and short-term strategic goals.
    -Create and maintain reports tracking military students including retention, graduation, and recruiting effectiveness. Research and report on national and regional veteran-related data as required by university administration. Collaborate with institutional research staff as needed.
    -Report to external agencies on the services provided and the military student population at UNC for accreditation and/or awards.
    -Serve as the back-up Work Study Site Supervisor for VA Work Study employees, coordinating the submission of applications, contracts, timecards and extensions on a yearly, semesterly, and bi-weekly basis as needed.

    University and Community Relations (25%)
    -Ensure diversity, equity, and inclusion practices are implemented in all collaborations, partnerships, and internal/external University and community relations.
    -Maintain collaborative partnerships with on campus, community, prospective students, and other university representatives by information sharing, outreach, recruitment,, enrollment, retention and mentoring activities.
    -Advocate for the needs of military affiliated students in the development of university policies, programs, and services.
    -Attend, and when appropriate, give presentations at local, regional, and national meetings, conferences, and symposia on topics related to higher education and student development, including those with a specific focus on military affiliated students.
    -Ensure the maintenance of external programs including the VA VITAL program, PAVE program, VA healthcare outreach, Veteran Mental healthcare, and state employment opportunities.
    -When appropriate, serve on committees that inform policies and procedures applicable to military-affiliated students at the university.
    -Serve as the main point of contact for external military units, and work closely with Education Liaisons on military bases in order to assist with enrollment and transition assistance for servicemembers interested in pursuing higher education after or during military service.

    Minimum Qualifications:

    Education

    Required:

    Bachelor’s Degree

    Preferred:

    Master’s degree in student Affairs/Higher Education, Social Work, Psychology, Public Administration, Criminology, or other related field.

    Experience

    At least one year of supervising student staff, interns, or similar veterans’ groups.
    At least one year of experience building partnerships and collaborating with on and off-campus organizations.
    At least one year of professional experience in developing, administering, and implementing programs and services in a college/university setting or similar.

    Preferred Experience:
    Experience working in an environment where diversity, equity, and inclusion are honored and practiced.
    At least three years of military service.
    Minimum 1-2 years’ experience providing bilingual support services and communicating effectively with student veterans in both English and Spanish.

    Certifications

    Six months of on-the -job training will be required in order to obtain desired level of competence with Department of Veterans Affairs education benefit laws and regulations.

    Certification/Registration can be waived if applicant is currently serving as a School Certifying Official.

Full-time employees are eligible to receive tuition waiver benefits, as well as dependents and spouses of UNC Employees who are employed at 0.5 FTE or above are eligible for undergraduate dependent tuition grants of up to 50%.
