Assistant Attorney General/Deputy Chief Counsel
Governmental Affairs Section - Kansas City
The Attorney General's Office is seeking qualified candidates to serve as the Deputy Chief Counsel for the Governmental Affairs Section. The Deputy Chief Counsel reports to the Section Chief Counsel, and is responsible for assisting the oversight and supervision of the Section's team of attorneys and support staff.
The Governmental Affairs team handles the Attorney General's Office's widest variety of work, allowing attorneys to gain specialized experience and learn new areas through both litigation and client counseling. Attorneys in the Section serve as counsel to the State of Missouri and over 50 state agencies, boards, and commissions. Attorneys practice in both state and federal trial and appellate courts, with significant practice in state administrative tribunals. The Section has staff in the Office's Jefferson City, St. Louis, and Kansas City locations.
The Section's most common legal areas include administrative law; professional licensure discipline; constitutional law; statutory and regulatory interpretation; environmental and natural resources law; Sunshine Law enforcement and education; election law, campaign finance, and ballot initiatives; government contracts; criminal records expungements; social services and mental health work, including guardianships and abuse and neglect issues; and animal welfare and cruelty issues against inhumane commercial animal breeders.
The Deputy Chief Counsel assists in convening regular meetings with client agencies to discuss ongoing litigation, assigning cases to team members, providing guidance and strategy to team members, implementing training and staff professional development, monitoring the performance of team members, conducting performance evaluations, and participating in recruitment and retention efforts. The Deputy Chief Counsel is expected to carry a docket of cases. The Deputy Chief Counsel is expected to work closely with the Section Chief Counsel in developing and implementing goals for the office, as well as working with other parts of the Attorney General's Office to ensure effective handling of cases, identify opportunities for collaboration, and advance the Office's missions.
Previous experience managing legal staff is preferred. Candidates should have litigation experience across a broad practice area, with government and administrative practice preferred.
This position will involve intermittent travel within the State.
