Databricks seeks a VP, Associate General Counsel, Commercial. The VP, AGC Commercial must have demonstrated ability to build teams, have strong business acumen beyond legal topics, and be a great cross-functional collaborator. This role is for someone who is a proven and experienced leader in the commercial legal space, with deep expertise in leading complex, strategic transactions as well as a passion for creativity and innovation and leveraging technology to better scale a rapidly growing organization.
Responsibilities:
- Effectively lead and manage the commercial legal team for the Americas and have strategic foresight
- Manage the drafting and negotiation of commercial agreements that comply with company policies and risk tolerance
- Continuously improve standard form agreements, legal processes, and contract management systems
- Handle complex matters such as global data privacy issues, technology and IP agreements and commercial contracting across a broad range of industry sectors
- Manage day to day counseling of assigned business clients, both domestically and globally
- Build strong relationships with GTM leaders, and collaborate across the company to continuously refine our GTM strategy and business opportunities
- Support cross functional pragmatic leadership within the legal department and business partners
- Manage commercial legal budget and forecasting
- Ability to pivot quickly with the business needs and be extremely responsive to clients and senior leadership
Qualifications & Experience
- The ideal candidate will be an energetic, business-minded, and self-motivated attorney with at least 20 years’ experience practicing law in a corporate environment with extensive experience in commercial matters, including contract drafting and negotiation
- Experience at a SaaS company, in particular in the Cloud space, and experience with global data privacy matters; public company experience desirable
- Must have prior experience leading a commercial team with at least 20 legal professional direct reports or General Counsel for a small company
- Excellent written, oral, listening, and organizational skills with proven ability to interact effectively with varied audiences, including executive team members
- Excellent communication, negotiation skills, and executive level presentation skills
- Ability to work under pressure and prioritize and manage workload, manage simultaneous tasks, and meet deadlines with a changing fast-paced environment
- Proven ability to lead a team and excellent coach and mentor who values the success of his/her team
- Strong interpersonal skills and emotional intelligence with the ability to stand firm on issues with business clients when necessary
- Collaborative team player
- A high degree of self-sufficiency, independent judgment and a business appreciation all with a view to managing risk in the most cost-effective manner
- Superior legal and analytical skills – excellent judgment and initiative in selecting the most effective solutions and possess a business-oriented approach to problem solving
- Exposure to regulated industries and public sector transactions
- Strong business acumen including the ability to think like a business person and integrate legal and business issues, so as to partner effectively with business leaders.
- Business-oriented approach to problem solving, tempered by an appreciation for legal complexity and risk
- Detail-oriented and resourceful with excellent follow-through skills
- Collaborative, business minded and team orientated promoting innovation and motivation throughout the team.
- “Roll up the sleeves” mind set
- Prior International experience is a plus
- Intellectual property/licensing agreement experience is desirable
- Experience with corporate compliance matters is desirable
- Have state bar membership in either California or Washington
