    As a faculty member in the College of Education, the successful candidate will teach undergraduate and graduate level courses in Elementary Education; be involved in course and curriculum development; work effectively with various populations of students, colleagues, and members of the community at large; engage in productive research and grant seeking activities; and provide service to the program, college, university, and profession. The Assistant Professor in Elementary Education may be asked to coordinate academic program-related projects.

    The College of Education was formally established in 1996, supported by a unique undergraduate integrated curriculum created by the founding faculty members. COE quickly recognized the need for graduate programs that focus on supporting the demand for strong PreK-20 school leaders, where it continues to grow and expand its degree offerings.

In these environments, faculty and students reflect upon and engage in the applications of theory, research, and emerging technologies. These environments support the construction of knowledge, skills, and attitudes through collaboration and inquiry. As a result, faculty and students are empowered to create an enhanced quality of life within their respective communities.

    As the region's only comprehensive university, FGCU's College of Education (COE) prepares graduates for a wide range of careers from traditional PreK-20 education to museum programs, programs for children with special needs, instructional design, educational media, and e-Learning. The COE offers six undergraduate teacher certification programs: Early Childhood Education, Elementary Education, Special Education, Secondary Biology, Mathematics, and Social Science Education. Early Childhood, Elementary, and Special Education programs include the following endorsements: Prekindergarten Disability, Reading, and ESOL. The undergraduate programs are committed to producing highly skilled classroom practitioners by placing a strong emphasis on learning while doing and teaching by example. COE also offers seven master's degree programs including School Counseling, an Ed.D. program with five concentrations, and multiple programs supporting alternative paths to teacher certification. The undergraduate COE programs are Florida Department of Education and CAEP accredited.

    Job Description

    Typical duties may include but are not limited to:

    • Teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in Elementary Education and related fields.
    • Supervises student teachers, provides quality advisement, and mentors students as emerging leaders.
    • Collaborates both within and outside the university in teaching, service, and scholarship.
    • Engages in active service to the program, college, and university.
    • Maintains an active agenda of scholarly activities, including research and publication.
    • Assists in recruiting and retention of students majoring in education.
    • Participates in assessment/accreditation, program evaluation, and related data collection and reporting tasks.
    • Other duties as assigned.

    Additional Job Description

    Required Qualifications

    • Earned terminal degree (Ph.D. or Ed.D.) from an accredited institution in Elementary education or closely related field (e.g., Curriculum & Instruction; Reading, Math Education, Science Education, and Social Studies Education).
    • ABD may also be considered, if degree is conferred by August 7, 2024. If successful candidate is an ABD, appointment will be made at a Lecturer level on a fixed contact.
    • Minimum of three (3) years of recent full-time teaching experience in K-5 school settings.
    • A demonstrated record of teaching using instructional modalities both face-to-face and virtual classes.
    • Demonstrated potential for academic research related to Elementary Education and service sufficient to merit appointment the rank of Assistant Professor at Florida Gulf Coast University.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Demonstrated currency in elementary education-related professional literature.
    • Expertise with incorporating elements of experiential learning to foster engagement and excitement among students.
    • Expertise in data-driven decision-making.
    • Experience with state or national accreditation processes.
    • Experience with mentoring and supervising teachers and/or teacher candidates
    • Holding a teaching certificate in elementary education or related fields in Florida or other states
    • Experience in grant-seeking activities.
    • Active membership(s) in professional organization(s).

    Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

    • Ability to teach a full range of courses in elementary education which results in increased student learning outcomes.
    • Interest and skills for collaborating both within and outside the university.
    • Ability in to develop and deliver instruction resulting in improved student learning, especially online instruction.
    • Ability to communicate effectively in a variety of situations, as well as problem-solve and respond with flexibility.
