    JOB DESCRIPTION

    POSITION: Paraprofessional

    AFFILIATION: ESPA

    REPORTS TO: Principal – Meadowview School

    SUMMARY
    Under the overall supervision of the Meadowview Principal and general, daily direction of the assigned
    Special Education Teacher, the Paraprofessional performs a variety of instructional and routine classroom support duties related to the program.

    Classrooms are for students with moderate to severe cognitive and physical impairments in an elementary or secondary level program. Students are provided with an alternative and modified curriculum and specialized instruction. Staff are responsible for engaging students in the curriculum and handling health and behavioral needs under the supervision of the teacher, making judgement decisions quickly about student safety. Related service staff (speech therapist, school social worker, school psychologist) assist the teacher and students with instructional activities and behavior plans, which the paraprofessional is expected to implement as developed by professionals.

    PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Carry out and support instructional plans as designated by the special education teacher and the student’s Individual Educational Plan (IEP).
    • Assist students in reading, spelling, mathematics, interpersonal skills, problem solving and other subjects according to instructions and guidance from the teacher.
    • Implement student specific instructional, behavior, health, and safety plans.
    • Provide accurate documentation of behaviors, data collection and feedback on a daily basis.
    • Load and unload students from bus
    • Responsible for monthly Medicaid logging as assigned
    • Personal Care, health care and medication dispensing duties as assigned
    • Assist students as directed by special education teacher to keep students and staff safe.
    • Perform routine classroom support tasks such as taking attendance, filling out forms and required incident documentation, and updating student files.
    • Observe students and assists the teacher in maintaining a safe environment in the classroom, cafeteria, playground, general premises and/or on district approved field trips.
    • Maintain control of student physical activity, individually and in small groups and on/off campus by enforcing individual plans.
    • Set up and arrange supplies and equipment for student use in a classroom.
    • Prepare bulletin boards, charts, labels and displays as instructed.
    • Individually works with students to support their learning and gives informal assessments as instructed.
    • Operate classroom equipment, computers and related software, etc.
    • Escort students to and from offices, lunch, restrooms, buses, nurse’s office, other classes, etc.
    • Students may include ambulatory, physically, and/or cognitively challenged students.
    • Maintain and implement confidentiality with student information.
    • Other duties as assigned.

    QUALIFICATIONS

    CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS (If Applicable):
    Required

    • Attain and maintain Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) – Nonviolent Crisis Intervention Certification o NOTE: Initial and/or Refresher Training provided by District

    EDUCATION, TRAINING & EXPERIENCE:
    Required

    • Possession of a high school diploma or equivalent.
    • One (1) year or more experience in a school setting providing direct support to students.

    Desired

    • Possession of an Associate’s Degree in education, social work, psychology, or a related field.
    • Three (3) years or more experience working with individuals with special needs, such as: learning disabilities, physical disabilities, emotional disabilities and behavioral disorders.

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

    • Knowledge of CPI and methods used to positively support student behavior.
    • Knowledge of general needs and behavior of cognitively impaired students.
    • Knowledge of basic personal hygiene practices and procedures.
    • Skill with use of technology to implement work responsibilities.
    • Ability to develop and maintain effective relationships with adults and students.
    • Ability to reinforce instruction in the area of language arts, math, social studies, science, social skills, and problem solving.
    • Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions; work with individuals and small groups of students.
    • Ability to develop and maintain positive relationships with students, parents, and internal staff.
    • Ability to communicate with students/youth and motivate them to participate in learning activities.
    • Ability to communicate effectively with a variety of audiences both orally and in writing.
    • Ability to maintain emotional control under stress.
    • Ability to exercise discretion and confidentiality in dealing with staff, students and operations.
    • Ability to work independently and within teams to accomplish identified goals and strategies.
    • Ability to build and maintain positive working relationships with coworkers and students.
