  • San Francisco State University, Department of Elementary Education, Graduate College of Education, offers an exciting opportunity for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Elementary (TK-5) Social Studies/Social Justice Education beginning August 7, 2024. We seek a colleague whose teaching and research interests include Elementary (TK-Grade 5) Social Studies/Social Justice Education.  We are especially interested in qualified candidates with a demonstrated commitment -- through their research, teaching, and service -- to the diversity and excellence of our academic community and department.

    We are seeking applicants with experience in and/or demonstrated commitment to teaching and working effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds and members of underrepresented groups. This is part of a cohort hire focused on Black and Latinx/e student success.  We are looking for teacher/scholars who have an established commitment to teaching, research and/or service in and with the Black and Latinx/e community.  Candidates for this position are expected to satisfy two or more of the eight Black and Latinx/e Student Success Cohort Hire criteria:

     

    1. Training in and knowledge of historical and present-day structural racism, and practice that engages that knowledge (practice may include teaching, research, and/or service).
    2. Demonstrated knowledge of challenges and barriers for Black and Latinx/e students, and evidence of strategies employed to help students overcome such barriers.
    3. Evidence of employing anti-racist teaching strategies that support the learning and success of Black and Latinx students.
    4. Mentors and engages Black and Latinx/e students in research, scholarship, and creative activities.
    5. Evidence of research that contributes to equity, opportunities, and inclusion in higher education
    6. Evidence of research that integrates understanding of and/or engages Black and Latinx/e communities’ challenges and structural realities.
    7. Evidence of engaging in service to Black and Latinx/e populations within the discipline.
    8. Evidence of service and contributions to Black and Latinx/e communities.

    The Department of Elementary Education prepares skilled, transformative educators to teach and become leaders in culturally and linguistically diverse schools. We guide and support educators to develop a pedagogy of caring and cultural responsiveness, and to teach for social justice and equity for children and their families. Our Multiple Subject Credential (TK-grade 5) and Master of Arts programs provide current educational theories, innovative teaching practices, and guided field experiences in diverse schools. The person hired for this position will join a dedicated faculty group with expertise in all areas of elementary education, with a focus on social studies and social justice education.

    Responsibilities: The position requires undergraduate, credential, and graduate teaching in the area of Elementary (TK-5) Social Studies/Social Justice Education; mentoring and advising undergraduate, credential, and graduate students; supervising student teachers; developing an active ongoing scholarship program in one’s area of specialty; and ongoing committee and service assignments in the department, college, and university.

    Required qualifications:

    • Ph.D. or Ed.D. in Education or a closely related field from an accredited program. Terminal degree must be completed by the first day of employment.
    • Record of successful teaching at the elementary school level, preferably in public schools.
    • Demonstrated ability to incorporate inclusion, diversity, anti-racist pedagogy, and educational equity in teaching, and/or scholarship/creative works.
    • Experience teaching and working closely with students in multilingual settings.
    • Record of working and communicating effectively with colleagues and students.

    Compensation:

    The anticipated Assistant Professor (Academic Year) classification salary range is:

    $83,500 to $88,500 annually (12 monthly payments per academic year).

    The anticipated hiring range is $6,958 to $7,375 per month

    Salary offered is commensurate with experience and qualifications. In addition, the California Equal Pay Act prohibits employers from paying its employees less than those of the opposite sex and/or another race or ethnicity for substantially similar work (https://www.dir.ca.gov/dlse/california_equal_pay_act.htm).

    Professional development funds, moving expenses, start‐up funds, and a reduced teaching load may be available.
