Position Description

and the at invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Computer Science Education in Fall 2024, in any field of computer science education that enhances an interdisciplinary group of scholars in the Science Education Program who are active in chemistry education research, physics education research, computer science education research, and the learning sciences.

offers BS and MS in Computer Science and BS in Data Science. We also offer BS in Computer Science and Linguistics (jointly with the Dept. of Linguistics and Language Development, MS in Data Science (jointly with the Dept. of Math/Stat), MS in Bioinformatics, and support BS in Software Engineering (curriculum jointly administrated with the Dept. of Computer Engineering). The faculty members are excellent teacher scholars with rich publication records in the areas of machine learning, data science, information security, mobile networking, social networks, bioinformatics, etc. The Department, including both faculty and students, enjoys rich interaction and collaboration with Silicon Valley. We have received a Best Practice from the Center for Inclusive Computing to increase the representation of women and under-represented minorities in undergraduate computing.

The consists of a team of dedicated teacher-scholars recognized for their commitment to: 1) the preparation and ongoing support of justice-centered, socially responsive secondary science teachers, 2) the transformation of undergraduate science courses and student learning experiences, and 3) engaging in innovative science education research uniting the College of Science with the Lurie College of Education. Required Qualifications

• A Ph.D. in a computer science area with a focus in education research or a Ph.D. in science education or learning sciences with a focus in a computer science discipline or equivalent doctoral work is required. For non-computer science Ph.D. candidates, an BS/BA or MS/MA in computer science or a related area is strongly preferred.
  
  
• Applicants must demonstrate the potential for meaningful engagement of undergraduate and master students in their proposed research.
  
  
• Applicants should demonstrate an awareness of and sensitivity to the educational goals of a socially and economically diverse student population as might have been gained in cross-cultural study, training, teaching, and other comparable experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Priority will be given to candidates who possess one or more of the following:

• Experience in early university-level Computer Science courses or Computer Science Supplementary Authorization.
  
  

Key Responsibilities

• Excellence in teaching at both the undergraduate and graduate level is expected. Applicants should be familiar with a variety of research-based teaching techniques and have interest in implementing student-centered practices in courses of different sizes and levels. Research in computer science education is strongly preferred.
  
  
• The ideal candidate can teach Methods in Secondary School Science and a range of undergraduate and graduate courses in science education. The candidate can also teach introductory and upper-division computer science courses, especially early university-level courses and computer science education courses that contribute to a computer science teaching authorization.
  
  
• The candidate will participate in shared governance, usually in department, college, and university committees and other service assignments.
  
  
• The candidate must demonstrate awareness and experience understanding the needs of a student population of great diversity - in age, abilities, cultural background, ethnicity, religion, economic background, primary language, sexual orientation, gender identity, and academic preparation - through inclusive course materials, teaching strategies and advisement.
  
  

Other Duties
