    Position description

The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) in the College of Engineering (CoE) of the University of California, Davis (UC Davis) is seeking a Assistant Professor of Teaching (formal title Lecturer with Potential Security of Employment) position in Computer Engineering.

The Assistant Professor of Teaching series emphasizes excellence in teaching and student-centered efforts and complements the research-focused Professor series at the University of California. Appointment conveys membership in the Academic Senate and, contingent upon promotion, security of employment which is analogous to tenure. Professors of Teaching are expected to be outstanding teachers, engage in professional and/or scholarly achievement and activities, and provide service to the department, university, and public.

Attractive candidates will be outstanding educators who have a strong and demonstrable interest in teaching, and sound ideas to enhance the computer engineering undergraduate curricula and improve student learning and engagement at UC Davis. A successful applicant will be able to 1) teach core undergraduate computer engineering courses in areas of computer architecture, digital circuits and systems, embedded systems, and computer programming, 2) apply curricular revisions to enhance students' learning in the core courses with an emphasis on promoting hands-on education, and 3) demonstrate their ability to introduce new courses in other essential/emerging fields in computer engineering. Examples of such fields include (but are not limited to) parallel computing or operating systems or robotics or hardware-software codesign, etc.

In addition to demonstrating excellence in teaching, professors of teaching are expected to engage in professional and/or scholarly activities. Examples of such activities include (but are not limited to) scholarship in pedagogy and/or scholarship in their underlying research area and/or development and assessment of new educational initiatives and/or applying for grants related to education and/or initiating new learning centers and teaching programs, etc.

The successful candidate will also participate in the department's community outreach activities and assists with the program accreditation efforts in addition to serving in the ECE department, the CoE and Academic Senate committees.

The successful candidate will demonstrate an understanding of the barriers preventing full participation of members from historically underrepresented and marginalized student communities in higher education. Applicant's record of engagement and activities related to diversity, equal opportunity, and inclusion as well as their plans for future engagement will be part of the overall evaluation of the candidate's qualifications for a faculty appointment.

The successful candidate will be held to the standards and requirements of the college and department in which he/she/they is/are housed for recommending tenure and promotion.

UC Davis is a tier-one research university and has a strong history of engaging in teaching, research, and service for the greater public good as a land grant institution. Our vision can be found here [https://engineering.ucdavis.edu/about/next-level-strategic-vision].

Appointment will be as an academic year (9-month) assistant professor of teaching. The position will be hired between assistant professor of teaching steps 1 through 3 in the UC Davis step-plus system based on experience. The resulting hire will be at the assistant rank step 3 or below, regardless of the proposed appointee's qualifications. Because the hiring step is determined after the candidate has gone through the appropriate appointment process, all applicants for these faculty positions are required to adhere to the following instructions of providing Reference contact information only- 3 required; 3 optional (6 total).

With this commitment, UC Davis conducts a reference check on all first choice candidates for Academic Senate Assistant Professor or Lecturer with Potential for Security of Employment, Steps 4, 5, or 6, or Acting Professor of Law positions. The reference check involves contacting the administration of the applicant's previous institution(s) to ask whether there have been substantiated findings of misconduct that would violate the University's Faculty Code of Conduct. To implement this process, UC Davis requires all applicants for any open search for assistant professor to complete, sign, and upload the form entitled "Authorization to Release Information" into RECRUIT as part of their application. If an applicant does not include the signed authorization with the application materials, the application will be considered incomplete, and as with any incomplete application, will not receive further consideration.
