Environmental Technician
  • Crossroads Environmental, LLC
  • Spartanburg, SC FULL_TIME
  • Our Culture:

Each Crossroads Environmental, LLC team member is cared for on a personal level, and is not just a number as in the case in many larger corporations. Our goal is to provide our clients with quality work and personal care, but strive to do it during normal business hours because we believe that family and life outside of work are most important. We have a large customer base, which results in us being very busy every day. Days go by very fast due to the fast-paced environment. Team members are supported, but not micromanaged. Every day presents a new job and challenge, and while some jobs are two-person jobs, many are solo.

    Role (overview of this position):

This position is one that never gets boring. You might be in a mansion one day, on a college campus the next, in a vacant run-down house the next, and in the office for the next two. You travel to cities, as well small towns throughout SC, NC, and GA. This is a niche business that serves all sectors.

The position is for an environmental sampler and consultant related to asbestos, lead, indoor air quality, and occupational exposures; however, 70% of our business is in the asbestos field. Asbestos is a fibrous mineral that comes out of the ground, but was used in a wide array of building materials. It is found in drywall joint compound, flooring materials, insulating materials, siding, and ceiling texture to name a few. When it is in good condition, it is not a hazard; however, when damaged, it has been found to cause diseases such as mesothelioma and asbestosis. The general public doesn’t realize that asbestos products remain EVERYWHERE (K-12 schools, colleges, commercial buildings, public buildings, houses) and still has to be managed. Additionally, state and federal laws require that materials be sampled prior to renovation or demolition activities. In other words, this is a field that has endless opportunities/job security.

Asbestos: Collecting bulk samples of building materials for submittal to a laboratory for analysis, and writing a comprehensive report following receipt of sample results. Occasional air monitoring for asbestos may be required, which will include the collection of air samples, analysis using a phase contrast microscope, and overseeing asbestos removal projects. Applicant must be comfortable with working on ladders, roofs, in dirty environments, and under buildings (crawlspaces) on occasion. Applicant must be comfortable using standard tools such as hammer/chisel and drill.

Responsibilities (Critical behaviors associated with this role):

Asbestos Inspector-Must be willing to take great measures to ensure that a building is thoroughly investigated so that we can best serve our clients (prevent health hazards and unnecessary cost burdens such as change orders). This can include getting dirty and/or hot in order to ensure that the inspection is thoroughly performed regardless of circumstances.

Air Monitor-Must be willing to oversee the work that asbestos removal contractors are performing in order to protect our client (building owner) from liabilities. This will also require math skills to calculate airborne fiber concentrations.

Note Writer-Computer and report-writing skills are a plus, but the ability to take detailed, hand-written notes is a requirement.

Independent-Must be self-disciplined and able to work independently. This is not a setting where employees are micro-managed. Employees are responsible for independent follow-through on projects.

Completing assigned tasks on time – Must independently strive to complete assigned tasks on time in order to help maintain the day-to-day operations and ensure that clients receive reports in a timely manner.

    Requirements (expected proficiencies):

    Preferred

    ● Basic knowledge of building construction and/or mechanical systems

    ● Experience using tools such as hammer/chisel and drill

    Required

    ● Valid driver’s license

    ● Dependable vehicle

    ● Schedule flexibility (sometimes will require early mornings or late evenings, as well as occasional weekend and/or overnight travel)

    ● General math skills (surface area, volume)

    ● Attention to detail

    ● Willingness to climb ladders, work on roofs, in heat, in cold, and in dirty environments
