CT SIJ Legal Assistant Job Description:
A law firm that serves the Hispanic community throughout the NYC Metropolitan Area, as well as NJ and CT, is seeking a highly motivated bilingual Legal Assistant for its SIJ practice in Bridgeport, CT.
Responsibilities include:
· Review matter once the case gets assigned
· Draft SIJ Petition & Forms [ 6-1, 6-2, & 6-3]
· Gather all necessary documents to file case & present to attorney to final review
· File SIJ cases
· Update PM & Spreadsheet with new filing information
· Interview clients and draft SIJ affidavits
· Complete daily tasks; following up with all matters to confirm they are moving along
· Review court appearances & create task if there are additional documents to amend or send to court
· Review court calendar to confirm all dates have been added to PacticeMaster & spreadsheet
· Review mail & interoffice
Post-Petition Responsibilities for Paralegals:
· Follow up with court clerk if we have not received a court date after 30/45 days of filing a new case
· Keep track of any minor aging out within 6 months that do not have a court date yet. We must file an OSC if necessary.
· Prepare SIJ Affidavit to Support SIJ Motion & SIJ Affidavit to Waiver Service
· Confirm affidavits have been reviewed by attorney & confirm client have signed the affidavit. This must be done timely to avoid any delays in filing SIJ motion
· Draft SIJ Motion / OSC when necessary
· Confirm SIJ motion with affidavits have been filed 7 days prior to the court appearance [this is mostly for initial hearing]
· Confirm appearing attorney has added the appearance results in PM
· Review file 30 days before court to confirm we have everything necessary to move forward with appearance, especially if this is the 2nd/3rd appearance. We have to review the previous appearance notes to confirm what else is pending. If something is still pending, please discuss with virtual legal assistants.
· Contact court clerks if necessary
· Judges assign AFC [Attorney for Child] at the initial hearing, it is our responsibility to confirm AFC has contacted minor before the second appearance. If we do not have the contact info for AFC, we must contact court clerk and request information & contact AFC and provide them with minors contact info.
· Any post-petition document filing must be done by Camilo & Laura, unless they say otherwise
· Once we get the case granted & SIJ order signed, we are responsible to confirm that supervisors from the immigration team have received the order. Also, advise them of minors DOB so they do not miss any rush cases. Once you have done this, you can finally complete your task for this matter & email liaison team to close matter.
· If you see a SIJ matter was granted & we do not have an IMM matter opened, we must email liaison team ASAP to have client sign a retainer.
· If clients are past due with their balance, we must also notify liaison team & collector
Must have good writing and communication skills, ability to prioritize and work under a tight schedule, ability to multi-task, in depth knowledge of legal terminology and principles, and the ability to analyze legal documents for accuracy.
A minimum of 1-2 years of legal assistant experience required. Knowledge of immigration courts, court procedures and USCIS website is necessary.
Proficiency in Spanish and a desire to assist immigrants achieve the America Dream is necessary.
