Collaborates and supports colleagues regarding research interests and co-curricular activities. Additionally, Asst. Professor - Legal Support typically reports to a department head.     POSITION: Legal Services of Northwest Minnesota seeks to fill a full-time position for Legal Secretary at its Alexandria Office. Must enjoy people, variety and hectic pace. This position is in-person with limited flexibility.

     

    LOCATION:  Legal Services of Northwest Minnesota, Alexandria, Minnesota.

    Legal Services of Northwest Minnesota (LSNM) is a non-profit organization that provides free civil legal services to low-income people and families in 22 counties in northwest Minnesota. With 3 offices located in Moorhead, Alexandria and Bemidji, and a 45 year history of helping people enforce their legal rights, LSNM is committed to ensuring access to justice is available to all people in our communities.

    RESPONSIBILITIES:  The Legal Secretary is a non-exempt position.The Legal Secretary provides intake services to potential clients, prepares documents and a variety of other administrative tasks to support the legal work of staff attorneys including drafting letters, legal documents/pleadings, e-filing, filing, copying, telephone, scheduling, etc.  Other position responsibilities include: completing phone, online, and in-person intakes with potential clients to determine eligibility for LSNM’s services and provide follow up with case handlers and potential clients and using the case management system to screen applicants, accurately process client intakes and perform other tasks as needed. Applicants must be flexible and willing to accept additional duties as necessary. 

     

    QUALIFICATIONS:  Previous experience in legal work is preferred.  Ability to deal pleasantly and professionally with clients, attorneys, and general public. Excellent interpersonal communication skills are required to work with clients and the general public, and to provide a professional and respectful experience to clients. The Legal Secretary must have the ability to solve problems quickly and work in a fast-paced environment. The Legal Secretary must exercise judgment in implementing established policies and procedures and maintaining confidentiality of all information in the office. Strong telephone skills necessary.   

     

    Legal Secretary experience and familiarity with Minnesota Court’s e-filing system preferred. Experience in use of Microsoft Word or similar word processing systems required.   

     

    Additional Qualifications:

    • Strong telephone skills 
    • Experience in use of Microsoft Office 365, Word or similar word processing systems. 
    • Ability to deal pleasantly and professionally with clients, attorneys, and public.
    • Sensitivity to and empathy for low-income persons. 
    • Reliable attendance and dependability.
    • Ability to handle confidential information with discretion.
    • Attentive to detail. 
    • Ability to learn and use computer database program.   
    • Outstanding listening and communication skills.
    • Experience in the legal field or in a law office preferred but not required.
    • Ability to speak Spanish, Somali or Arabic a plus.

     

    CLOSING DATE:  May 1, 2024, or until filled.

     

    Starting Date:  As soon as possible.

     

    SALARY RANGE: Salary beginning at $45,000 dependent on years of experience, pursuant to current pay scale. LSNM offers a 37.5-hour work week, comprehensive benefits including health insurance, 403(b) retirement plan, generous paid time off, and paid holidays.
