Tenure-Track Asst Professor of Communication/Journalism - College of Music & Media

  • Primary responsibilities will include leading, developing, and teaching courses in journalism and serving as the program’s chair, which includes managing full- and part-time faculty members, curriculum development, student engagement and recruitment, and participation with the director’s leadership team. Additional responsibilities may include maintaining labs/materials, writing grants, and creating collaborations with media organizations and graduate programs locally, regionally, and nationally that foster pipelines to jobs and continued academic achievement
    • Serve as program chair;
    • Teach 3x3 load; 
    • Develop and manage the journalism program’s course carousel;
    • Schedule and lead area faculty meetings;
    • Serve on the School of Communication and Design leadership team;
    • Help build and maintain a recognized program of research, scholarship, and journalistic practice;
    • Assist with student and faculty recruitment and retention;
    • Work collaboratively to advance interdisciplinary work and publications;
    • Advance the school’s commitment to engagement journalism and solutions journalism;
    • Pursue extramural funding in alignment with school and campus priorities;
    • Teach undergraduate and graduate journalism and mass communication courses; 
    • Supervise undergraduate capstones and graduate thesis projects;
    • Advance the school’s commitment to the principles of DEI, including mentoring and supporting our diverse student body; 
    • Provide meaningful service contributions both within and beyond the university.
     While a Ph.D. is preferred, a master’s degree is required in journalism, mass communication, media studies, digital communication, or a related field. We are open to a range of research agendas and methodological approaches. Given the school’s desire to expand our curricula offerings, candidates with strengths in sports journalism, law/politics, health sciences, or investigative journalism are preferred.
     
    The ideal candidate will possess a highly acclaimed body of professional work and/or a promising trajectory of peer-reviewed research appropriate for the tenure-track assistant professor position. They will also demonstrate a commitment to equity, inclusion, justice, and forms of service, mentorship, and leadership appropriate for a journalism program emphasizing professional development, experiential learning, and community engagement.
     
    The ideal candidate will strengthen our school's reach and reputation in one or more of the following areas of emphasis: news and storytelling for Latino/a/x groups and other underrepresented populations.
     
    We seek a candidate skilled in digital storytelling using contemporary journalism approaches which can help our students develop expertise in multi-dimensional storytelling.
