The mission of the Department of Music at Colorado State University Pueblo is to prepare undergraduate students to function professionally in their chosen field of music within the larger context of a liberal education, to provide artistic enrichment for the community, and to serve as an artistic resource.The Director of Bands at Colorado State University Pueblo is a full-time, tenure-track position at the initial rank of Assistant Professor, to begin duties August 16, 2024. Primary responsibility is to instruct, administer/oversee the Wind Ensemble, Marching Band (see NOTE below), University (concert) Band, and Basketball Pep Band. Duties regarding the Marching Band include, but are not limited to student recruitment, show and field drill design, music arranging, and developing/managing appropriate marching band staff.

    Additional teaching experience in area(s) of expertise (instrumental conducting and/or instrumental music education preferred). Demonstrated teaching and conducting expertise at the collegiate level is required. Successful public school teaching experience is strongly preferred. Demonstrated effective leadership and organizational skills in order to develop and maintain a successful band program, including recruiting and outreach, both on- and off-campus. Position requires travel for performances, conferences, possible supervision of student teachers, and recruiting/outreach (a significant portion of workload expectations). This position will plan and administer the annual Festival of Winds (held in the spring semester) and develop a Basketball Pep Band.

    NOTE: Depending on the candidate’s skills and experience, Marching Band may or may not be a portion of the instructional responsibilities. Day-to-day primary instruction of this ensemble may be assigned to the Assistant to the Director of Bands, although responsibility for oversight and administration is assigned to the Director of Bands.

    Primary Duties
    Instruction  
    • Teaching courses in Music as assigned and according to the needs of the Music program, primarily in Band ensembles, but also in the area(s) of expertise (e.g. conducting, techniques, pedagogy). Teaching responsibilities include but are not limited to selecting appropriate textbooks and other materials; preparing and delivering effective instruction; preparing, administering, and providing timely feedback to appropriate assessments; reporting student progress; evaluating student outcomes; and determining final grades. 
    • Director of Bands position includes responsibility for all concert and athletic bands, and involves student recruitment, show and field drill design, music arranging, and developing/managing appropriate marching band staff. 
    • Position requires duties outside the regular Monday-Friday work week as well as frequent travel for purposes of recruiting and outreach. May also require travel to supervise Student Teachers.
    Research and Creative Activities 
    • Activities including but not limited to conducting and performing
    • scholarly work appropriate to the discipline for dissemination at local, state, regional, and national venues.
    Advising and Service
    • Advise students as needed with regard to assigned coursework as well as career and graduate school. Establish, post, and communicate with students and the Department Chair a minimum of five regularly scheduled office hours per week. 
    • Service activities include but are not limited to recruiting and outreach (including band-specific events such as Band Day and the annual Festival of Winds); University, College, and Department committees; University functions; campus meetings; other duties as assigned.

    Salary Range
    $58,000-$61,000

    Minimum Qualifications
    • PhD or DMA in Music
    • Marching band administration, including field drill design and writing
    • Demonstrated ability to relate to and commitment to serving diverse populations and learners
    • Previous college teaching experience within a Band program
    • Prior experience in a position requiring expertise in developing and administering a successful and comprehensive university band program
    • Experience developing and managing marching band staff 
    Preferred Qualifications
    • Bachelor’s in Music Education
    • Experience in instructing appropriate courses in the area(s) of expertise
    • Experience working with a diverse student and staff population
    • Experience teaching high school instrumental music
