    Reports to: Pastor / Head of Staff

    Summary of Position: Music is an integral part of the life and worship services of SMLC and the congregation. The Minister of Music will serve by leading worship on Sundays and at special services. This person will direct choirs and music ministry groups including adult, children, and bells. This person will encourage the participation of the congregation and their talents in worship and grow the music program.

    Qualifications & Skills:

    · Demonstrate a passion for Christ with enthusiasm in alignment with the beliefs of SMLC, RIC, and the ELCA.

    · Have a working knowledge of church liturgy in order to select music appropriate to the liturgical season.

    · Demonstrate proficiency in reading music.

    · Demonstrate organ and piano proficiency.

    · Demonstrate experience in leading a choir, a handbell choir, as well as with other soloists and instrumentalists.

    · Demonstrate ability to vocally lead the congregation in singing.

    · Possess patience working with differing abilities, strong organizational skills, and demonstrate the ability to work as part of a team.

    · Demonstrate proficiency in using a computer.

    · Pass the requisite background check.

    Working Relationships: Works in close cooperation with all staff and church members.

    Responsibilities:

    · Provide musical accompaniment for worship services and choirs. Worship services include Sunday at 9:30 a.m., Holy Week services, funerals and weddings, and other services designated by the Pastor. It is understood that a variety of traditions in styles of organ, piano, bells, various other instruments and choral music is appropriate for the services and variety is encouraged.

    · Demonstrate an eagerness to recruit and engage the musical gifts of individuals and groups within the congregation and community to be shared in worship.

    · Create, teach and direct music ministries groups as desire and interest arise (i.e. adult and children’s choirs, the current handbell choir, etc.)

    · Meet with the Pastor and Worship and Music Team to plan and coordinate music for the church seasons.

    · Select appropriate service music, hymns, songs and anthems to be led at services each Sunday.

    · Ensure music selected for worship and other services is submitted on time to be included in church bulletins.

    · Coordinate and implement special drama and music programs in collaboration with the Pastor and Worship and Music Team and coordinate all rehearsals/performance schedules.

    · Participate, as able, in the life and ministry of SMLC.

    · Maintain the church’s music library and copyright usage of music.

    · Oversee and manage the maintenance of all music equipment.

    · Communicate in writing when publicity is required for a Music Ministry event or activity.

    · Attend and participate in all scheduled staff meetings, Worship and Music Team meetings and specially called meetings.

    · Arrange for all substitute and guest musicians. Especially for any PTO that you take. It is understood that in the case of illness time or circumstance may not permit you to make such arrangements. Arrange with Pastor to approve for any substitute selected.

    · Develop and submit annual budget for the Music Ministry.

    · Adhere to the guidelines outlined in the HR Policy of SMLC.

    ***It is agreed that you will be free to perform outside work as your schedule allows and so long as job requirements are met satisfactorily.

    Compensation:

    · This is a 20 hour a week position.

    · Salary is $28,087.

    · Compensation for wedding arrangements will be negotiated between the Minister of Music and the wedding couple.

    · Compensation for funerals and memorial services will be paid by the family of the deceased.

    Evaluations: Performance review will be conducted after the initial three month probationary period and annually thereafter.

    Pay: $28,087.00 per year

    Expected hours: 20 per week
