    Job Summary
    This recruitment will be used to fill one full-time Biological Science Research Technician 2 position for the School of Exercise and Sports Science in the College of Health at Oregon State University (OSU). This is a limited duration appointment expected to last approximately 18 months from the appointment begin date.

    This position is to facilitate ongoing research of the Translational Metabolism Research Laboratory, directed by Drs. Sean Newsom and Matthew Robinson, as well as the Pacific Northwest Center for Translational Environmental Health Research, directed by Dr. Jamie DeWitt, at Oregon State University.
    The primary role of this position is to assist with completion of research projects funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Valley Fellowship and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The incumbent will work with and under the direction of Drs. Newsom, Robinson and DeWitt to provide critical support to ongoing research, including sample collection and analysis, laboratory supply inventory, ordering and organization. Research activities will occur in multiple laboratory settings, including work in biosafety level 2 (BSL2) settings, involving work with human samples, work in a laboratory animal facility, involving mice, as well as cell culture. Additional responsibilities include assisting sample collection in a clinical research setting, as well as coordinating clinical research activities. The incumbent will be expected to assist with laboratory safety compliance reporting. The position will therefore provide critical support for diverse on-going research projects and overall laboratory function.
    Laboratory environments are highly collaborative, including graduate and undergraduate students. The incumbent will work with members of other research groups and clinical teams at Oregon State University and Samaritan Health Services. Work is performed at Oregon State University in Corvallis, including clinical research at the Samaritan Athletic Medicine Center (located on the OSU campus).

    Key Responsibilities
    75% Research Support: Assist Directors to complete ongoing research:
    • Assist with sample collection and analysis for ongoing human and model systems research.
    • Follow and optimize standard operating procedures (SOPs) for laboratory analysis.
    • Maintain effective study and laboratory record keeping.
    • Complete study documentation and reports in accordance with overseeing agencies (OSU, NIH, IRB, IACUC).
    • Maintain effective communication with clinical research participants, including scheduling and reminders regarding study visits.
    • Maintain mice in laboratory animal facility, including diet and weight monitoring, cage changes, animal tracking, injections and other measures as needed.
    • Manage daily activities of project management, optimization and problem solving.
    • Provide regular updates at laboratory and Director meetings.


    25% Laboratory Management: Contribute to success of daily operations of laboratory including:
    • Inventory, order, and organize laboratory supplies.
    • Track and submit invoices for payments to vendors.
    • Ensure laboratory personnel (e.g., students) meet institutional safety requirements and recording keeping for training and safety.
    • Manage chemical inventories and waste disposal pickups following institutional guidelines.
    • Maintains record keeping systems (study binders, data records, etc.) in accordance with regulatory agencies (IRB, IACUC, NIH, etc.) and as indicated by Directors.
    • Provides recommendations to Directors for revisions to workflow or protocols.
    • Generates reports and updates for the Directors, study teams, collaborators and overseeing agencies

    What We Require

    Two years of college-level courses in (specific field of biological science) and one year of experience related to the area of assignment at the Biological Research Technician 1 level; OR an equivalent combination of training and experience.

    This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per University Standard: 05-010 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.

    Working Conditions / Work Schedule
    Working environments will include typical office, biomedical research laboratory (BSL2), and a medical clinic (Samaritan Athletic Medicine Center). Physical demands include the ability to lift boxes and supplies and carry supplies and samples weighing up to 25 pounds between buildings (upwards of 10-15 minute walk). Specific personal protection equipment will be provided and required for specific laboratory and clinical spaces (e.g. gloves, lab coat, eye wear). Incumbent will undergo training for working amidst biological and chemical safety considerations (e.g., biohazard, chemical safety, laboratory animal training).
    Work schedule will be Monday through Friday (anticipated at 30-40 hours per week), with emphasis on morning through mid-afternoon. The position will have flexibility for workday start and end times that can be discussed with Directors. The ability to work irregular hours (i.e., early morning) to accommodate necessary research activities is required. The incumbent may be asked to attend study days that require start times of 6:00am or include animal fasting that may occur as early as 4:00am. Starting time will be known and discussed well in advance.
