    REPORTS TO: Principal and Special Education Director

     

    PERFORMANCE STANDARDS:

     

    1. Maintains at all times an orderly learning atmosphere and keeps the Principal and Special Education Director fully informed of the special education program’s activities and problems. 
    2. Assists in proper referrals of individuals in the process of determining if a student is eligible for special education services.
    3. Assists in the evaluation and re-evaluation process of students for entry into the appropriate special education program.
    4. Assists in determining specific learning problems, skill deficiencies, and/or social adjustment difficulties of the student, and helps initiate the appropriate educational program as established by federal, state, local, and SBDM regulations/policies.
    5. Assists in compiling case history data on those cases where additional family history, health history, early development history, and environmental history are deemed appropriate.
    6. Conducts and completes collaboratively with other teachers/administrators all required elements for students eligible for special education services on their caseload and three-year evaluation of students enrolled in the program, including: behavioral observations; all elements of the evaluation; due process paperwork; attendance at SBARC meetings to consult with parents and teachers regarding test results and recommendations; development and maintenance of individualized plans (IEP’s) for all students on their caseload.
    7. Develop appropriate health and/or safety plans based upon the individual student needs, as applicable.
    8. Collaborates with other staff and parents to develop the IEP for each student assigned.
    9. Evaluates the progress of each child on their caseload enrolled in the supplemental and/or regular classroom activities.
    10. Prepares on-going progress in accordance to district policies and procedures  administering pre-tests and post-tests as appropriate and necessary.
    11. Provides appropriate individualized programs of instruction to meet individual student needs.
    12. Maintains confidentiality of student records in accordance to district policies and procedures.
    13. Follows the policies and procedures as outlined in the district’s Special Education Policies and Procedures Manual and follows revised procedures as outlined by the Director of Special Education in accordance to KDE regulations.
    14. Maintains accurate records for Medicaid billing and submits records in a timely manner, if applicable.
    15. Schedules classes for instruction geared toward specific IEP objectives, and strives to discover specific teaching techniques that will prove most beneficial with each individual student served.
    16. Devises and experiments with a variety of innovative instructional techniques (with priority being given to the IEP goals) consistent with the needs and capabilities of each student on their caseload.
    17. If applicable, coordinates community-based instruction and on-site vocational training and opportunities that help students with moderate to severe disabilities be productive members of general education classes and school functions.
    18. Shares duties of the school as assigned by the Principal, and supervise pupils in out-of-classroom activities during the assigned working day.
    19. Observes the Board approved “chain of command” in airing grievances and in communicating suggestions for improving school operations.
    20. Plans and supervises purposeful assignments for instructional assistants and/or parent volunteers, if applicable, and cooperatively works with coordinators/Principals in evaluating their job performance.
    21. Attends faculty meetings and Parent/Teachers Organization meetings, and serves on staff/district and SBDM Council committees as assigned.
    22. Participates in school-based decision making, including electing teacher Council representatives, serving on the Council, and/or providing input and feedback on all matters relating to the operation of the school in his/her building.
    23. Supports or participates in school-wide student activities and social events and approved fund-raising activities if applicable.
    24. Creates a safe, disciplined, and effective environment for learning.
    25. Takes all necessary and reasonable precaution to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
    26. Assumes responsibility for requisitioning and maintaining needed equipment and supplies after consulting the Director of Special Education.
    27. Maintains proper inventories non-expendable school supplies, materials, and equipment assigned to the classroom.
    28. Serve as a resource to the regular classroom teacher(s) in the development of a balanced program.
    29. Maintains professional competence through professional development activities provided by the district and/or consortia, and through self-selected professional growth activities.
    30. Maintains contact with parents for on-going intervention and progress.
    31. Assists in upholding and enforcing school rules, administrative regulation, Board of Education policies, and SBDM Council policies.
    32. Completes monthly and final end-of-year data reports.
    33. Always maintains the highest professional standards in personal conduct.
    34. Performs related duties and assumes other responsibilities as may be assigned by the Principal, Director of Special Education, or the Superintendent.
    35. Adheres to the Professional Code of Ethics.

     

    EVALUATION: 

    Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board’s policy on Evaluation of Certified Personnel.
