    PURPOSE:

    Under the general administrative direction of the Director of Recreation and working in collaboration with the Senior Coordinator of Recreation, the Assistant Athletic Trainer performs the full range of clinical athletic training functions, which involves the organization, coordination, and delivery of daily athletic training services to student-athletes. Due to the nature of the work, the incumbent must be available to work weekends, evenings, and holidays, as required.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to, the following:
    • Provides program coordination and expertise in athletic training services to a wide variety of intercollegiate club sports including; but not limited to basketball, soccer, volleyball, water polo, rugby, lacrosse. Provides office hours, home game medical coverage as needed.
    • Consults with other athletic trainers, physicians, and other health professionals on injuries and treatment plans and coordinates with the recreation staff. Informs recreation staff and other health professionals on the status of injuries and treatment plans.
    • Maintains student athlete medical records including medical histories, injury reports, and treatment and rehabilitation programs. Assists in maintaining CSURMA insurance coverage.
    • Assists the Sr. Coordinator with scheduling of student athlete physical examinations, and for scheduling any necessary postseason medical evaluations of student athletes; and coordinating training room operations.
    • In collaboration with the Sr. Coordinator, assists with the acquisition and inventory of athletic training equipment and supplies, first aid equipment and supplies, and assists in developing and monitoring the program budget.
    • Oversees concussion protocol and return to play/return to learn process. Consults with SDR, Academics, and student athlete physicians to support return to play/return to learn.

    Other Functions:
    • Perform other job-related duties and special projects as assigned.

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

    General knowledge of: the principles and practices of athletic training including conditioning and injury prevention; injury assessment and rehabilitation; full range of therapeutic modalities and their practical use and physiological basis; other therapeutic preventions and treatments such as taping, bracing, and massage; effective use of rehabilitation and exercise equipment; rules regulations and guidelines established by the CSU Sport Club Manual and CSUMB Recreation, pertaining to student athletes, their training, sports medicine care, and health and safety; Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) standards for handling Blood Borne Pathogens; maintaining medical records, including Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) standards; and following insurance procedures.

    Ability to: demonstrate leadership, organizational, and administrative skills involved in coordinating an athletic training and sports medicine program; effectively assess and evaluate injuries and their severity; develop conditioning and rehabilitation programs and manage and treat injuries; use the full range of appropriate therapeutic modalities and treatments and rehabilitation and exercise equipment to treat and prevent injuries; determine the appropriate referrals for athletes to other healthcare professionals; recognize life threatening situations and administer the appropriate emergency aid; use a computer to perform medical, insurance and other recordkeeping functions; and work in an environment with competing priorities. Incumbents must possess strong interpersonal and communications skills to develop effective working relationships with athletes and serve as a liaison among athletes, coaching staff, parents, visiting teams, physicians and other health professionals.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

    Equivalent to a bachelor's degree in Athletic Training, Physical Education, Kinesiology or related field of study, or a combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge and abilities. Course work must include completion of the Board of Certification (BOC) curriculum requirements.

    Equivalent of two years of experience as a certified Athletic Trainer in a high school or college environment.

    SPECIALIZED SKILLS:

    Upon hire must possess and maintain Board of Certification in Athletic Training and be certified in CPR/AED (cardio pulmonary resuscitation and automated external defibrillation) for the Professional Rescuer and first aid. Must possess a current National Athletic Trainer Association membership. Must participate in all OSHA required training and adhere to the related policies and procedures as required. Must possess and maintain a valid license to drive in the State of California, pass the Defensive Training Class, and be insurable under the University's liability coverage. Demonstrated ability to address the essential functions associated with this position including the knowledge and abilities identified above.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS/DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE:

    Master's degrees in Athletic Training or related field of study. First Aid, CPR Instructor, and Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) Certified. Experience in supervision and instruction of student athletic training interns. Experience with the teaching of an Introductory Athletic Training course and course-work in Sport Psychology. Proficient in the use of programs such as SportsWare Injury Tracking software. Technical fluency with Microsoft Office Professional Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Google email and calendaring software, or equivalent.

Position may require working at a computer and desk for extended periods of time.
