  • The Department of Athletics at Saint Martin’s University is seeking a Temporary Assistant Athletic Trainer
    Salary/Wage: $40/ hour; 20 hours/ week x 13 weeks

    The Administrative Assistant to the Director of Nursing will perform complex and varied assignments for the Director of Nursing and assist with the general administration of the department.
    The Temporary Assistant Athletic Trainer is responsible for the care and management of the 13 sports at Saint Martin's University, under the direction of the Head Athletic Trainer and full time Assistant Athletic Trainer. This is to include, injury prevention, evaluation, management and treatment of athletic injuries, short and long-term rehabilitation of athletic injuries, education and counseling of student-athletes. The Temporary Assistant Athletic Trainer is responsible for athletic related health care administration in consultation with and under the supervision of the Team Physician(s) and other qualified medical personnel.
    Essential Functions and Responsibilities
    Pre/Post Practice & Competition Preparation
    Perform daily pre- and post- practice /competition preparation based on schedules provided by coaching staff in the athletic training room. This may include but is not limited to taping, treatments of athletic-related injuries using therapeutic modalities (heat, cold, ultrasound, EMS), providing water and ice for practice/competition. The Assistant Athletic Trainer is responsible for communicating the status of injured student-athletes to his or her coach in addition to any practice modifications/accommodations that may be needed. Some camp medical coverage will be required.
    Manage Rehabilitation Programs
    The Assistant Athletic Trainer will develop and supervise rehabilitation programs for student-athletes with athletic-related injuries in the Athletic Training Room. Rehabilitation programs will be designed on an individual basis, specific to the injury stage and sport demands of each student athlete. The Assistant Athletic Trainer will monitor each student-athlete’s rehabilitation progress and advance as appropriate, keeping in mind the overall health and well-being of the student-athlete.
    Injury Assessment
    The Assistant Athletic Trainer will be responsible for performing injury evaluations for athletic-related injuries and managing emergency care when needed. The evaluation will be conducted using the HOPS method, which includes taking a comprehensive history of the present injury and any related previous injuries, observation and bilateral comparison of injured body part, palpation of the injured area, and any relevant special/stress tests to determine ligament stability, joint range of motion, and muscle strength. Based on the information gathered during the evaluation the Assistant Athletic Trainer will then make an injury assessment and determine whether physician referral is needed. The Assistant Athletic Trainer is responsible for notifying coaches when a student-athlete is injured and will keep the coach updated as to the student-athlete’s condition
    Maintenance of Student Medical Records
    The Assistant Athletic Trainer will maintain accurate and up-to-date records for all student athletes. This will include documentation of any injuries (athletic-related and non-athletic-related injuries) reported to the Athletic Training Room, daily treatment logs, rehabilitation goals and progress, and any related medical documentation (physician notes, operative reports, discharge notes, and radiology reports). These records may only be released by the Assistant Athletic Trainer, with the student-athlete’s consent. The Assistant Athletic Trainer may be asked to assist in filing and collecting documents for any claims filed to the secondary insurance policy. Documents should be completed and approved by the Head Athletic Trainer. Any disputed claims must be brought to the Head Athletic Trainer and will be managed on a case-by-case basis.
    Minimum qualifications
    • Bachelor’s degree Athletic Training or related field, such as Exercise Science or Kinesiology. Master’s degree preferred.
    • Must pass the Board of Certification exam and have graduated from a CAATE (Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education) accredited program.
    • Athletic Training experience at the collegiate level preferred
    • Must have written verification of Washington State License to practice as an athletic trainer.
    • Successfully pass a criminal background check.
    • Basic Life Support and/or First Aid/CPR for the Professional Rescuer Certified
    Competencies
    • Must be supportive of a Catholic, Benedictine philosophy of education.
    • Stays apprised of current policies, legal and ethical issues in higher education including the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act (GINA) and other relevant local state and federal educational and health care laws.
    • Serve as a liaison between athletes, coaches, team physicians and other health care professional under the direction of the Head Athletic Trainer.
    • Maintains accurate, detailed, and up-to-date student-athlete records that include injury evaluation and subsequent treatment notes, rehabilitation programs, medical documentation (physician notes, radiology reports, etc.) and insurance claim documentation. Understands the confidential nature of the information under their care and maintains that confidentiality.
    • Communicate clearly and effectively with student-athletes, coaches, Department of Athletics staff and medical personnel regarding student-athlete injuries and current status, and day-to-day operation of Athletic Training Room. Earns the trust, respect, and confidence of coworkers, students, parents and coaches through consistent honesty, forthrightness and professionalism in all interactions.
    • Maintains a daily work schedule that allows sufficient time to meet in-season teams’ pre- and post-practice/competition needs.
    • Performs accurate injury assessments for athletic-related injuries and makes physician referrals as necessary.
    • Responds to difficult, stressful or sensitive situations in ways that reduce or minimize potential conflict and maintains good working relationships among internal and external community members.
    • Demonstrates a strong commitment to the Student-Athlete concept and a working knowledge of NCAA/GNAC rules and regulations is required.
    • Composes letters, memos, emails, spreadsheets, reports and other written documents with clearly organized thoughts, proper sentence construction, punctuation and grammar. Demonstrated experience with databases, spreadsheets, and word processing software.
    • Carefully inputs data and prepares documents accurately and reviews all work before submission.
    • Adapts to new and changing situations with ease
