  • Job Summary

    Performs secretarial/clerical duties while acting as a communication center for the nursing unit. Performs specific patient care procedures under the direction of a licensed Nurse and/or performs specific support procedures for the operations of the Emergency Department.


    Essential Functions

    • Promote the mission, vision, and values of the organization.
    • Courteously greets and directs customers. Deals with patients and their families in situations requiring tact and discretion. Provides routine information as requested to staff, patients, visitors, and the public.
    • Answers telephones, takes and delivers phone messages, and efficiently processes information.
    • Transcribes physician orders from patient chart to the proper forms in preparation for verification by professional staff.
    • Communicates and processes necessary paperwork/information for patient admissions, transfers, and discharges.
    • Assembles and organizes patient charts to ensure that charts are complete and in order. Posts laboratory and other results in the patient chart.
    • Maintains unit files by organizing and adding blank forms as needed.
    • Rounds on patients and families frequently to assess and address personal needs, concerns, or comfort-related issues. Reports information to the responsible nurse when necessary.
    • Places or receives calls from hospital departments, hospitals, doctor’s offices, or medical agencies to coordinate services for patients. Coordinates interfacility transfers and completes appropriate paperwork.
    • Monitors, collects, and records information in the patient record. Collects and records vital signs, weights, and other patient data.
    • Transport patients and documents action on patient record.
    • Delivers specimens to the laboratory. Transports blood products or medical equipment.
    • Operates patient monitoring systems. Performs bedside testing specific to unit needs.
    • Perform wound care and dressing changes under the direction of an RN. Assists nurses and physicians with patient care needs as delegated.
    • Performs 1:1 direct visual observation for patients at risk for self-harm. Assist with application and removal of restraints under the direction of an RN.
    • Ensures cleanliness of nutrition areas and general unit. Cleans and stores equipment. Empties trash, linen bags, and sharp containers. Stocks medical supplies, linens, and paper goods. Inventories equipment as required. Processes broken equipment as directed. Maintains equipment logs as required.
    • Communicates information pertinent to the end of shift summation before leaving the unit.
    • Responds to established emergency procedures
    • Perform other duties as assigned

    Non-Essential Functions

    • Maintain a working knowledge of:
      • Medical terminology
      • Common medical procedures
      • Hospital routines and procedures, general functions of various hospital departments
      • General clerical practices and procedures
      • Basic computer skills


    Professional Requirements

    • Adhere to dress code, appearance is neat and clean.
    • Complete annual education requirements.
    • Maintain patient confidentiality at all times.
    • Report to work on time and as scheduled.
    • Wear identification while on duty.
    • Maintain regulatory requirements, including all state, federal and local regulations.
    • Represent the organization in a positive and professional manner at all times.
    • Comply with all organizational policies and standards regarding ethical business practices.
    • Communicate the mission, ethics and goals of the organization.
    • Participate in performance improvement and continuous quality improvement activities.
    • Attend regular staff meetings and in-services.


    Qualifications

    • High school diploma or equivalent
    • Medical experience preferred
    • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification or must be obtained within thirty (30) days of hire
    • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification preferred
    • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification preferred

    Physical Requirements and Environmental Conditions

    • Ability to sit for extended periods of time while working at a desk
    • Ability to stand and move throughout the unit and hospital
    • Ability to lift and carry up to 30 pounds
    • Ability to write by hand and operate a computer keyboard.
    • Ability to read and write the English language
    • Ability to work in a physically demanding, high-stress environment
    • Ability to work in an environment with potential exposure to blood and body fluids, communicable diseases, chemicals, radiation, and repetitive motions
    • Ability to push and pull heavy objects, including handling and lifting patients
    • Ability to hear normal speech, even in a moderately noisy environment, to hear and talk on the telephone and in person.
