    GENERAL DESCRIPTION
    The Office of the Attorney General (OAG) is a dynamic state agency with over 4000 employees throughout the State of Texas. This experienced attorney position is in the Financial Litigation and Charitable Trusts
    Division’s Financial Litigation group. The position provides expertise in specific and relevant areas of law to division management, and division attorneys; handles or directs high-profile and/or complex litigation affecting the Financial Litigation and Charitable Trusts Division; and serves as a mentor to division attorneys. The work also involves pre-litigation advice and investigation, hearings, discovery, negotiations, trials, and appeals, as well as drafting and reviewing potential legislation. Moreover, this position will handle commercial litigation matters, including software development and technology disputes; construction cases; health care contracting matters; state contracting and procurement issues, as well as securities, insurance, banking, accountancy, pension benefits, and various administrative law matters. This Assistant Attorney General position may be based in Dallas or Austin depending on the candidate’s preference and the needs of the Financial Litigation Team. Candidates based in Dallas will work remotely with the Austin-based Financial Litigation Team from an OAG satellite office and occasional trips to Austin for in-person meetings will be necessary.

    ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
    Oversees the preparation of legal opinions, briefs, pleadings, motions, petitions, and other legal documents
    Coordinates, plans, and monitors legal activities
    Analyzes factual and legal issues; and develops evidence through witness interviews, depositions, and other discovery
    Oversees the preparation of cases for trial and tries cases before state and/or federal court
    Represents the State’s interest in various civil matters relating to financial and commercial litigation
    Provides legal advice to client state agencies, board, and officials
    Represents the Office of the Attorney General before state or federal district and appellate courts
    May oversee the performance of legal research and reports findings and conclusions
    Advises clients and management on factual and legal issues
    Drafts bills and amendments for legislative consideration
    Maintains effective working relationships with co-workers, attorneys, client agencies, and opposing counsel
    Serves as an agency specialist in a specific area of law
    May supervise the work of others
    Performs related work as assigned
    Maintains relevant knowledge necessary to perform essential job functions
    Attends work regularly in compliance with agreed-upon work schedule
    Ensures security and confidentiality of sensitive and/or protected information
    Complies with all agency policies and procedures, including those pertaining to ethics and integrity

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
    Education: Graduation from an accredited law school with a Juris Doctor degree (J.D.)
    Licensed as an attorney by the State Bar of Texas
    Member in good standing with the State Bar of Texas
    Experience: Four years full-time civil litigation/civil trial experience in financial or complex litigation, including direct experience with discovery, motion practice, trial experience, and appellate litigation
    Knowledge of contracts, financial, charitable trusts and securities law
    Skill in using a computer for word-processing and data entry/retrieval
    Skill in handling multiple tasks, prioritizing, and meeting deadlines
    Skill in effective oral and written communication [Writing sample required at time of interview, if selected]
    Skill in conducting effective research
    Skill in exercising sound judgment and effective decision making
    Ability to handle stressful situations
    Ability to receive and respond positively to constructive feedback
    Ability to work cooperatively with others in a professional office environment
    Ability to provide excellent customer service
    Ability to work in person at assigned OAG work location, perform all assigned tasks at designated OAG workspace within OAG work location, and perform in-person work with coworkers (e.g., collaborating, training, mentoring) for the entirety of every work week (unless on approved leave)
    Ability to work more than 40 hours as needed and in compliance with the FLSA
    Ability to arrange for personal transportation for business-related travel
    Ability to lift and relocate 30 lbs.
    Ability to travel (including overnight travel) up to 5%

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
    Post-graduate degree in business and finance
    One year judicial clerkship in either federal or state court
    Six years of experience in contracts and construction law
    Strong legal writing skills
