Attorney is responsible for using specialized knowledge of national, state, and/or local laws to advise and represent clients and organizations in criminal or civil proceedings and other legal matters. Provides legal advice and counsel in support of business activities and transactions. Being an Attorney researches and interprets existing laws and regulations and anticipated changes to laws to guide informed decisions and reduce risk. Prepares and reviews various agreements, contracts, and other legal documents. Additionally, Attorney represents the organization in litigation, negotiations, and other matters where legal counsel is required. May have a billable hours requirement. Requires a JD. Requires State Bar membership. Typically reports to a manager. The Attorney work is closely managed. Works on projects/matters of limited complexity in a support role. The Georgia Department of Corrections seeks to fill a vacancy for an attorney in the Office of Legal Services. Legal Services assists the Commissioner and staff with transactional legal issues that arise in the operation of the States prison system. Areas of practice include contracts, employment law, constitutional law and civil rights, administrative law, and healthcare. Legal Services also liaises with the Attorney General's Office on pending litigation against the agency and GDC employees, and we handle all requests for access to public documents under the Open Records Act. This position may be filled as an Attorney 1, Attorney 2, Attorney 3, or Attorney 4 depending upon the applicant's credentials.
Minimum Qualifications:
Juris Doctorate from an accredited college or university AND license to practice law in the State of Georgia OR eligibility to sit for the next Georgia Bar examination OR reciprocity (must obtain Law License).
Note: Some positions may not allow the eligibility clause.
Preferred Qualifications:- Experience working in a law office representing a governmental entity.
- Experience dealing with requests for documents under the Open Records Act.
- Experience working in a correctional or law enforcement setting.
- Experience reviewing and analyzing pleadings, subpoenas, and similar documents.
- Employment law experience.
- Civil rights law experience.
- Experience providing instruction to adults in a classroom setting.

The Office of Legal Services is located on the GDCs beautiful campus in Forsyth, Georgia. It is an easy commute from Atlanta's southern suburbs or north of the Macon area.
