Administers and interprets a variety of tests, such as air and bone conduction, speech reception, and discrimination tests to determine the type and degree of hearing impairment, site of damage, and effects on comprehension and speech. Being an Audiologist evaluates test results in relation to behavioral, social, educational, and medical information obtained from patients, families, teachers, and other professionals. Reviews charts, test results, and other patient data to understand issues and develop treatment programs to alleviate symptoms and treat disorders. Additionally, Audiologist monitors and evaluates treatment progress and adjusts care plan as necessary. Programs, fits, and adjusts hearing aids for customers. May require Doctor of Audiology (Au.D.) in some states. Requires a master's degree in audiology. Typically requires Certificate of Clinical Competence in Audiology (CCC-A). This position is to fill a 40 hours/week vacancy available in the Hearing Conservation Department.

BASIC FUNCTION: Under the supervision of the Coordinator, Hearing Conservation, the Audiologist supports the identification, intervention, and education of children with hearing loss. The Audiologist conducts audiological evaluations with infants, toddlers, and school-aged children; assesses and consults regarding auditory functioning and hearing technology (hearing aids, cochlear implants and hearing assistive technology) as applicable to the educational setting; educates and guides parents to intervention and educational resources; and collaborates and communicates with education and community professionals working with deaf and hard of hearing students in the county. Actual responsibilities may be defined according to the range of knowledge and skills and departmental needs.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES: Conduct comprehensive audiological evaluations with infants, toddlers, and school-aged children, with and without developmental delays, to determine range, nature and degree of auditory dysfunction; this may include auditory processing assessment;
Monitor hearing levels, auditory behavior and functional performance with and without hearing equipment;
Counsel families and educators regarding test results and educational impact;
Educate parents and students regarding hearing loss, hearing technology, and educational implications;
Assist families in accessing community professionals for additional testing, intervention, and funding sources for medical and audiologic care, hearing equipment, and developmental assessments;
Determine needs, select and implement hearing assistive technology in the educational setting;
Monitor students’ ability to use hearing and hearing equipment (hearing aids, cochlear implants, hearing assistive technology) in the classroom, including analysis of and guidance regarding classroom acoustics and listening environment; present recommendations for improving listening environment, classroom accommodations and use of hearing assistive technology;
Collaborate and consult with, guide and advise teachers of the deaf/hard of hearing, general education teachers, early start specialists, psychologists, speech/language pathologists, community professionals, and others working with children with hearing loss or other auditory dysfunctions;
Consult with families, teachers of the deaf/hard of hearing and other school staff in the evaluation, educational placement, and recommendation of strategies and accommodations to address students’ educational needs as a result of hearing loss or other auditory dysfunctions; participate in IEP meetings;
Provide in-service training on hearing, hearing testing, hearing impairments and management of hearing technology, and implications of auditory dysfunction to school personnel, students and parents;
Prepare and maintain a variety of records and reports in compliance with department, district, County, and State requirements;
Operate a variety of specialized audiometric equipment such as an audiometer, immittance and otoacoustic emissions equipment, hearing aid analyzer, and FM and infrared hearing assistive technology;
Drive a vehicle to various County and school district locations to conduct a variety of audiology-related duties and
Perform related duties as assigned.

ABILITY TO:

Analyze students’ classroom listening demands and function and make recommendations for modifications and accommodations accordingly. Assist students with hearing loss in using amplification systems and auditory skills;
Provide case management in a timely and professional manner;
Assist families in accessing inter-agency services and community resources;
Speak and present information effectively in small and large groups;
Apply effective interpersonal skills with diverse families, teachers and others using professionalism, tact, patience and courtesy;
Utilize correct English grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary verbally and in writing;
Communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others;
Maintain records and prepare reports in compliance with applicable standards and codes;

LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Possess or be eligible for a valid California State license in Audiology, and a valid Clinical or Rehabilitative Services Credential in Audiology, and a valid California driver license.
