Automotive Mechanic performs maintenance and repairs on automobiles and light trucks. Performs major repairs like body work, chassis and engine repair, and disassembling and assembling components. Being an Automotive Mechanic also performs minor repairs and maintenance work such as replacing worn drive belts, hoses, and filters. Helps diagnose issues, uses electronic indicator systems to identify problems, and performs routine safety checks on brakes, suspension, exhaust, cooling, and other systems. Additionally, Automotive Mechanic adheres to appropriate safety procedures. Typically requires a high school diploma. Typically requires a Certificate in Automotive Technology. Typically reports to a supervisor. The Automotive Mechanic works under moderate supervision. Gaining or has attained full proficiency in a specific area of discipline.     Description

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

    • Performs works as outlined on repair order with efficiency and accuracy, in accordance with dealership and factory standards.
    • Diagnoses vehicle problems based on customer complaints and inspection.
    • Communicates with parts department to obtain needed parts.
    • Saves and tags parts of the job if under warranty or if requested by the customer.
    • Examines assigned vehicle to determine if further safety or service work is required or recommended.
    • Communicates with service advisor immediately if additional work is needed, if work outlined is not needed, or if repairs cannot be completed within the promised time.
    • Documents all work performed and recommended on the repair order.
    • Road tests vehicles.
    • Participates in manufacturer-sponsored training programs, schools, and events.
    • Keeps abreast of manufacturer technical bulletins.
    • Inspects and test drives newly delivered vehicles for obvious damage and missing major components and driveability functions.
    • Installs optional equipment specified by the customer or dealer.
    • Supervises work of any apprentice technicians as assigned.
    • Reports machinery defects or malfunctions to supervisor.
    • Ensures that customers' cars are kept clean. Notifies service advisor immediately of anything that has happened to change the appearance or condition of the vehicle.
    • Keeps shop area neat and clean.
    • Maintains and is accountable for all dealership-owned tools and manuals. Returns them to the proper place and in the same condition they were received.
    • Understands, keeps abreast of, and complies with federal, state, and local regulations, such as hazardous waste disposal, OSHA Right-to-Know, etc.
    • Operates all tools and equipment in a safe manner.
    • Reports any safety issues immediately to management.

    QUALIFICATIONS

    EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

    High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

    Must be able to operate both automatic and manual transmission vehicles.

    LANGUAGE SKILLS

    Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

    MATHMATICAL SKILLS

    Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

    REASONING ABILITY

    Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS

    While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk, bend, stretch, kneel, stoop, crawl, climb, balance, twist, turn, handle, reach, lift and carry up to 50 lbs. The employee is frequently required to talk or hear.

    WORK ENVIRONMENT

    The work environment can range from slow to fast paced. The work environment is indoor and outdoor and may include inclement weather. The work environment is a multi-tasking, front line customer service environment. The noise level in the work environment is moderate to extreme.

    Numerous chemicals are used on a frequent basis as a normal part of this job. In order to recognize and protect oneself from chemicals in the work place, the employee will:
