Automotive Mechanic performs maintenance and repairs on automobiles and light trucks. Performs major repairs like body work, chassis and engine repair, and disassembling and assembling components. Being an Automotive Mechanic also performs minor repairs and maintenance work such as replacing worn drive belts, hoses, and filters. Helps diagnose issues, uses electronic indicator systems to identify problems, and performs routine safety checks on brakes, suspension, exhaust, cooling, and other systems. Additionally, Automotive Mechanic adheres to appropriate safety procedures. Typically requires a high school diploma. Typically requires a Certificate in Automotive Technology. Typically reports to a supervisor. The Automotive Mechanic works under moderate supervision. Gaining or has attained full proficiency in a specific area of discipline. GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: Services automotive equipment; assists journeyman automobile mechanics in the overhaul and maintenance of automobiles, trucks, tractors, and miscellaneous automotive construction equipment; performs related work as required.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Works under the supervision of a Garage Foreman or employee of higher grade who makes work assignments and inspects work for conformance with established standards.
Services automobiles, trucks, motorcycles and automotive construction equipment with gasoline and oil, and checks tires, batteries and radiators.
Cleans, washes oils, and greases automotive vehicles and parts.
Assists mechanics in the repair of automotive equipment.
Independently makes the less complex automotive repairs; makes routine adjustments and replacement of parts.
Dismantles automotive equipment preparatory to repairing or replacing worn or broken parts.
Cleans and cares for tools and machines.
Performs custodial duties by policing and keeping premises clean; answers telephone on afternoon shift.
Installs and removes batteries; repairs tires.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT(S):
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to reach with hands and arms. The employee is frequently required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, feel or operate objects, tools or controls. The employee is also frequently required to sit; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; and talk or hear. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move more than 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.
